The long-awaited game, Hollow Knight: Silksong, has now been officially released by its developers, Team Cherry, following seven years of development and six years of anticipation since it was first announced. Over this time, Hollow Knight: Silksong has become a significant presence on the internet, with memes and “silkposting” providing amusing diversions to help pass the time during the wait.

I must admit, I found myself growing impatient as long development cycles stretched out for Silksong, but the anticipation turned out to be quite enjoyable. Admittedly, I’m a bit disappointed now that the wait is over, as it fostered a lively online community among us fans. However, those mixed emotions soon fade away when I launch Silksong. To my delight, this game has been an absolute blast and reminded me of my cherished gaming memories from days gone by.

Cutting My Teeth on Some of Gaming’s Greatest Platformers

In the late ’90s and early 2000s, some of my initial gaming experiences began when my older cousin showed me games that would leave a lasting impact on my life. Specifically, I was introduced to “Castlevania: Symphony of the Night” and “Super Metroid.” These titles unveiled a whole new universe I hadn’t realized existed. Although I was quite young, I can still recall the moment I saw Samus on screen for the first time. The impact these series had was so significant that they eventually gave rise to an entirely new genre known as Metroidvania.

Looking back a few years, I was fortunate enough to acquire my own gaming consoles and handheld devices. The PS2 and Game Boy Advance became my constant companions, immersing me in countless hours of adventure with Jak & Daxter and Metroid Fusion. These platform games only fueled my passion for this genre, even though they weren’t Metroidvania style. Unfortunately, as gaming has advanced, it seems that quality platformers are becoming increasingly rare. However, there are still gems like Astro Bot and indie favorites such as Planet of Lana that keep the platforming spirit alive. Yet, it appears that open-world RPGs and live-service titles are currently dominating the spotlight.

Discovering Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid broadened my horizons, unveiling a realm I was previously unaware existed.

Silksong Continues Its Predecessor’s Special Spark

In 2017, playing Hollow Knight rekindled my passion for platform games. This small indie game had all the elements that initially drew me into this genre. It featured stunning level designs, engaging yet challenging gameplay, and an intriguing world with a captivating lore. These aspects were also what attracted me to classics like Castlevania and Metroid. Much like its sequel Silksong, Hollow Knight pushes the boundaries of Metroidvania-style challenges, and I’m delighted to say that it lives up to its predecessor in every way.

Experiencing this game feels like rekindling my childhood joy. The enigma surrounding its universe leaves me spellbound, causing me to immerse myself for extended periods without realizing it. Despite the challenging nature of Silksong, there’s something irresistibly captivating about being defeated by a boss and immediately wanting to give it another shot – much like my early days as a gamer.

Team Cherry hinted a while back, during Gamescom, that there might be additional content, or downloadable expansions, for Silksong in the future.

Silksong Has Already Made History

On its release day, the highly anticipated game “Silksong” caused some of the major online retailers like Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch to temporarily go offline. This indicated a significant demand as many were eager to start a new chapter in the “Hollow Knight” series. Now that the game is available, I hope countless other gamers are experiencing the same level of enjoyment from “Silksong”. Team Cherry has truly created something remarkable with this series, and I’m excitedly waiting for their next project.
