Hollow Knight Silksong: Things We Want To See In DLC

After approximately a week, there’s a noticeable decrease in excitement around “Hollow Knight: Silksong”. While it doesn’t signify that fans are ready to move on completely, many have now completed their initial playthrough. The developers, Team Cherry, have expressed intentions to continue providing content updates for the game over time. However, the specifics of these updates remain unclear. Notably, “Hollow Knight” received substantial support through DLC in the past.

Will Team Cherry provide continued updates for Silksong, similar to Stardew Valley that has been regularly updated since its release in 2016, or will they introduce paid expansions, like Dead Cells did? If the latter is the case, here are some potential directions for DLC in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Will Team Cherry offer free updates akin to Stardew Valley’s continuous updates since its 2016 launch, or will they release paid expansions like Dead Cells did? If the latter occurs, here are some possible directions for DLC in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Go Back To Hollownest

Pull A Pokemon Gold/Silver

One truly thrilling unexpected delight within video games was found in the titles _Pokemon Gold_ and _Pokemon Silver_. Upon finishing their adventure in Johto, players were given the unique opportunity to revisit the prior region, Kanto, with their existing character and all accumulated items. This hidden, additional campaign appended to the original game was virtually unheard of at that time. It would be fantastic if such a surprise could also be incorporated into _Hollow Knight: Silksong_.

In contrast to initial assumptions, Act 3 in Silksong won’t transport players to Hollownest, the location from the first game. Although it isn’t included yet, there’s a possibility that Team Cherry might include Hollownest in the DLC lineup. Given the narrative, where Hornet is abducted and taken to a new land, Pharloom, her eventual return home could involve Hollownest.

The Return Home

Getting There Is Half The Battle

Before reaching Hollownest, players might have to undergo some challenges on their way. Given that the trip to Pharloom wasn’t a quick one, the journey back could be just as long, potentially covering an area equivalent to either Hollownest or Pharloom in terms of map expanse. Team Cherry may also decide to incorporate external landscapes for this adventure, with not many presently available in the main game aside from Mount Fay, a particularly tough climb even in Silksong.

The game could potentially incorporate additional characters, anthropomorphized animals perhaps, although given the miniature scale of the world, where everything is bugs, it might present some challenges. However, if creating animal-like beings isn’t feasible, introducing a transitionary phase between Hollownest and Pharloom could help connect the two worlds effectively.

Boss Rush

Replay Through Your Trauma

While not every game includes it, the “boss rush” feature is quite popular enough to be well-known. In the upcoming game Hollow Knight: Silksong, offering players the opportunity to battle some of their favorite bosses directly from the main menu would certainly be an exciting addition. These battles can be quite challenging, such as those against the Last Judge and the Savage Beastfly, but there are also others that players might enjoy revisiting. The Widow and the Fourth Chorus make for excellent examples, but each player will likely have their own favorites.

It’s also beneficial to provide players with an opportunity to hone their skills against previously encountered bosses without the added challenge of approaching them initially. This feature, ideally to be introduced in Silksong as a future update, will serve as a training ground. The game already features a harder mode, making practice sessions valuable. Regardless of personal feelings towards the bosses, they are among the most captivating aspects of the game, and a boss rush could draw more attention to their brilliance.

Play As New Characters

But, Don’t Pull Another Silksong

Initially conceived as downloadable content for Hollow Knight featuring Hornet as the second playable character, Silksong eventually morphed into a standalone game due to the developers becoming engrossed in its creation. This is an ideal outcome for any DLC, given that Silksong surpasses the original Hollow Knight in scale. Although a Hornet DLC would have been entertaining, a full-fledged game is always preferred, even if it means waiting longer to play it.

Clearly, the team behind Silksong is likely considering additional playable characters. Shakra seems like a strong candidate given her existing combat abilities within the game and multiple instances where she assists Hornet. Additionally, Garmond and Zaza could also make for engaging characters as they aid Hornet on her quest. Both characters would bring excitement if introduced as playable options in the same map or even a new area.

A New Area Set Up Like A Roguelike

Dive Into Darkness

In a more adventurous vein, I’d love to see Team Cherry expand the world of Hollow Knight with a standalone roguelike area. Much like how God of War: Ragnarok introduced a roguelike mode post-game, this could be a fantastic addition that fans would appreciate. Given the randomness already present in areas like The Mist within Hollow Knight: Silksong, it feels like a natural progression for the game. It doesn’t necessarily have to star Hornet; instead, Team Cherry could shine a spotlight on less prominent characters, such as Jubilana, offering them their moment in the limelight.

In the town of Songclave, you’ll meet Jubilana – a merchant who frequently goes missing on journeys seeking new merchandise for their store. As a player, you can navigate through randomly generated dungeons, gather loot alongside Jubilana, and subsequently sell these finds to pilgrim adventurers. This gameplay dynamic mirrors that of Moonlighter, a roguelike blending action and shopkeeping elements. Given that Jubilana is unable to engage in combat, the game could take on more of a stealth-based roguelike approach. Compared to Hornet, Jubilana’s concept presents promising ideas for transforming Hollow Knight: Silksong into a compelling roguelike experience.

Let The Crossovers Roll

Team Up With Other Indies

In a unique collaboration, the game Hollow Knight has teamed up with several independent titles to insert Easter eggs and additional content into their respective games. For instance, Dead Cells received items, The Binding of Isaac gained cards, while Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes was given a wearable shirt. This kind of cooperation among indie developers is common, and it’s expected that future references to the upcoming game Hollow Knight: Silksong will show up in other games as well. Additionally, Silksong might follow suit by releasing some quirky DLC and updates, possibly even asking for help from fellow developers.

Mina the Hollower serves as a promising illustration of an upcoming indie game, with its protagonist, Mina (a tiny mouse), being a potential character who could seamlessly blend into the realm of Pharloom. This little mouse could potentially serve as an NPC offering quests or becoming a foe for players to battle, or alternatively, weapons from the game Silksong might be incorporated. If these possibilities materialize, it opens up potential collaborations for Team Cherry, allowing players to acquire items from other indie games, interact with NPCs, or even obtain unique skins.
