Catherine O’Hara, the much-loved actress known for her iconic roles in films like Home Alone and the TV series Schitt’s Creek, has died at age 71. The news was first reported by TMZ, and fans are sharing heartfelt messages of sympathy and sadness online.
O’hara began her remarkable career performing on stage in her hometown of Toronto, Canada. There, she formed a lasting friendship with Eugene and Dan Levy before moving on to work in film and television.
The actress started her career on television with the comedy show SCTV, which became very popular. This show earned her first Emmy Award and proved she was a talented comedian. She then transitioned to film, where she starred in several memorable roles before the year 2000, including Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice.
For me, and I think for a lot of people, Catherine O’Hara will always be Kate McCallister from Home Alone. It’s such a classic! She brought that mom role to life, and she even came back for a sequel, which was great. It’s funny, people would actually stop her on the street just to get her to yell at them – she was that good! She was already well-known before, of course, but Home Alone really made her a star for a whole new generation, and it’s how I first discovered her incredible talent.
After appearing in a few smaller parts, the actress returned to television. She also had a successful career as a voice actor, providing her talents to popular projects like Frankenweenie, The Wild Robot, Over the Hedge, and Elemental.
Catherine O’Hara teamed up with Dan Levy again in 2015 on the show Schitt’s Creek, and she quickly became a beloved character. Her portrayal of Moira Rose, with its energetic speaking style and unique fashion, made her a standout among the cast. She won an Emmy in 2020 for the role, and while she’s taken on other parts since then, she’s best known for her two most memorable characters.
Catherine O’Hara is remembered by her husband, Bo Welch – whom she met while filming Beetlejuice – and their sons, Matthew and Luke.
