The Guerrilla Games’ Horizon franchise appears to have settled nicely into its primary gameplay mechanic: intricate, strategic machine hunts set in an exceptionally distinctive science-fiction setting. However, it can be overlooked that Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West aren’t typical action-adventure games because they align with current PlayStation blockbuster standards. Despite being fantastic games individually, they imply that the Horizon series might not reach such lofty heights in terms of growth as its storyline aspirations.
In the game “Horizon Forbidden West,” the Sunwing flying mount isn’t obtained until close to the end of the game, which suggests that Guerrilla Games might need to rethink the design of the open world in “Horizon 3.” The stunning underwater landscapes are a significant factor in this reconsideration. Moreover, it may be challenging for them to introduce new ideas or advanced features, such as flying mounts, if “Horizon 3” is intended to conclude the trilogy. However, “Horizon” could borrow an impressive feature from its PlayStation compatriot, “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” that significantly enhances open-world traversal: instantaneous fast travel.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Somehow Made Extraordinary Traversal Even Better
The method of moving around and navigating in open-world Spider-Man video games is often a topic of intense discussion. Some parts of the Spider-Man community firmly support games like Spider-Man 2 (2004), Ultimate Spider-Man, or Spider-Man: Web of Shadows for their exceptional web-swinging mechanics, while others find Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series to be incredibly intuitive and well-suited for today’s gaming preferences. The web-swinging in Marvel’s Spider-Man is particularly praised due to its ease of use and seamless flow, enhanced by a sprawling, open-world New York City that serves as an ideal playground for players to explore.
Later on, the game Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales enhanced the initial game’s movement mechanics a bit. It did this by incorporating Miles’ bioelectricity abilities for traversal and offering him distinctive movement sequences that set him apart.
In other words, Insomniac Games had already set up traversal mechanics in its previous games and could have simply expanded New York City for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. However, instead, the new game introduces web-wing gliding and a fast travel system that allows players to teleport to any location on the map. This means that when players choose a spot to appear, they will be dropped right into the gameplay action as their chosen Spider-Man character, without any delay.
Horizon 3 Can’t Afford a Misstep Following Forbidden West’s Traversal
It’s unclear at this point if Horizon Forbidden West’s sequel will wrap up Aloy’s story. Many series have trilogies, but The Last of Us Part 2 and God of War might be wrapping up their respective stories with just two games each. However, considering the presence of Nemesis, it wouldn’t be unexpected if Horizon 3 aims to bring closure to its main narrative.
If Guerrilla decides to update Horizon 3 with new mechanics and features, it’s not certain that they will do so unless they plan to use them in other projects as well. Given the importance of flight in open-world exploration, it would be reasonable to assume that flying mounts might significantly influence player movement in Horizon 3, potentially allowing for limitless possibilities in the sky.
Instead of waiting for inspiration, Horizon might learn from its PlayStation compatriot and adopt without shame an exceptional trait that significantly improves its open-world exploration: the lightning-fast travel system seen in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
In simpler terms, Horizon 3 might adopt the fast travel system from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, enabling players to instantly join gameplay while seated on a Sunwing at their chosen spawn point. Since Aloy can’t web-swing like Spiderman, it would be an impressive enhancement to the series if players could effortlessly traverse the map whenever they desire, even if certain areas require activation beforehand.
