A recent interview showed that the team at Horizon Steel Frontiers was particularly enthusiastic about using AI during the development process, and they integrated it heavily into their work.
Horizon Steel Frontiers is a new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by PlayStation and NCSoft. While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, it’s confirmed to be launching on both mobile and PC. Recently, more information about the game’s development process, including how they’re using artificial intelligence, has become available.
Horizon Steel Frontiers Team is the One that Wants to Utilise AI the Most
In a recent interview with RuliWeb (translated by a ResetEra user), the team working on Horizon Steel Frontiers discussed how they’re using AI. They confirmed they’re experimenting with AI-controlled characters – specifically, having them assist with both teamwork and combat. This was in response to a question about AI NPCs originally planned for the game when it was known as Project Skyline.
The report highlighted how AI is improving the gaming experience, for example, by finding the ideal number of players for each game session. NCSoft is also using AI internally to help with development tasks, including both coding and creating artwork. They stated that AI is now a significant part of their development process and plan to share more details about the specific technologies they’re using in the future.
Finally, the team behind Horizon Steel Frontiers expressed the biggest interest in using artificial intelligence. NCSoft is already using this technology quite a bit, and they expect to see a noticeable jump in AI within their games, especially after the release of Aion 2.
Horizon Steel Frontiers is Set in a Region Inspired by Arizona and Mexico
Alongside discussing AI features, the developers also revealed the game’s setting, called “Deadlands,” which is inspired by Arizona and Mexico. They plan to stay true to the spirit of the original source material while focusing on themes of resilience and hope, and showcasing these ideas through how players experience the game.
The game focuses on the excitement of fighting gigantic machines, and has now evolved into a massively multiplayer online experience. Developers are aiming to create a fresh and engaging combat system where players can destroy machine parts, team up with others, and equip weapons salvaged from those same machines onto mobile carriers. Players will explore a world inspired by the original game’s tribal environments, with extensive character customization options, including body type and makeup, allowing for detailed personalization.
Tencent has addressed the lawsuit filed by Sony regarding their game being similar to Horizon, arguing that simply being well-known doesn’t automatically grant trademark protection.
