As a seasoned gamer who has been around since the dawn of the PlayStation era, I must say I’m both intrigued and a tad annoyed by Sony’s recent move to delist Horizon Zero Dawn from the Epic Games Store. I understand the need for technological improvements and visual enhancements, but the timing seems a bit too coincidental, doesn’t it?

Sony has withdrawn “Horizon Zero Dawn” from the Epic Games Store, implying that the original 2017 action-adventure game can no longer be bought through this platform. This move might appear unusual, but it’s probably because Sony chose to remove the game to prepare for the upcoming remastered version, set to launch on October 31.

Following a rating disclosure by the ESRB, the existence of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered was officially confirmed during a State of Play event, with Guerrilla Games and Sony taking center stage. As per Guerrilla’s Studio Director, the remaster will boast a variety of technological advancements, visual upgrades, and enhanced features. The objective behind this remaster is to harmonize the 2017 original game with its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, by incorporating approximately 10 hours of re-recorded dialogue, numerous graphical improvements, revamped character models, and many other upgrades.

Despite Sony seemingly increasing the price of Horizon Zero Dawn after its remaster was announced, they offer an affordable upgrade option for existing owners priced at $9.99. New players will have to buy the remastered version for $49.99. In what appears to be a strategy to discourage users from buying the original game and later upgrading, Sony has removed Horizon Zero Dawn from the Epic Games Store. Now, when visiting the store page, the game is simply marked as unavailable. As per PCGamesN, it’s been approximately a week since the game was delisted at the time of writing this article.

Sony Pulls Horizon Zero Dawn From Epic Games Store

Horizon Zero Dawn is still available for purchase on Steam at the moment, however, the price matches that of the upcoming remaster, which means you’ll pay more if you decide to upgrade in the future. It remains unclear whether Sony plans to remove the game from other digital platforms like Steam and GOG. The original Horizon series title didn’t migrate to PC until 2020, offering higher frame rates compared to its PlayStation 4 version, but no enhanced graphics were included.

The follow-up game, Horizon Forbidden West, was released on PC this year following its launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2022. Both games were generally well-received by the community, but Sony’s other PC adaptations have faced criticism. In May, Helldivers 2 stirred up controversy, and more recently, God of War: Ragnarok and Ghost of Tsushima have necessitated users to link their Steam account with a PSN account. Despite Sony rescinding the requirement for Helldivers 2, they’ve faced ongoing criticism for this condition with each new release.
