Key Takeaways

  • Horizon Zero Dawn’s PS5 remaster includes new features and graphics.
  • Fans compare Aloy’s remastered model to the original version.
  • Aloy’s new character model in the remaster is based on Horizon Forbidden West.

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about the need for a Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 remaster. However, after seeing the improvements in graphics and gameplay, especially the upgraded Aloy model based on Horizon Forbidden West, I’m now excited to jump back into the world of post-apocalyptic robotics.

In the upcoming PlayStation 5 re-release of Horizon Zero Dawn, Aloy is set to receive a detailed visual enhancement. Recently, whispers circulated that Guerrilla Games was developing an updated version for their 2017 sci-fi action game, and it was later confirmed during the PlayStation State of Play livestream this week. Horizon Zero Dawn: Remastered is slated to launch on both PlayStation 5 and Windows PCs on October 31. Owners of the original PS4 version can upgrade to the digital remaster for only $10.

Since rumors started about the upgraded version of “Horizon Zero Dawn” for PS5, gamers have had a range of reactions – some think it’s unnecessary because the original can be played on PS5 via backward compatibility. However, the remastered version of “Horizon Zero Dawn,” titled simply as “Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered,” is offering enhanced accessibility options and graphics that match those found in its 2022 sequel, “Horizon Forbidden West.” This upgrade also includes more than 10 hours of freshly captured motion capture for conversations.

This week’s trailer for the remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn has sparked fans to compare it with the PlayStation 4 original. A Twitter user named Mr Pyo recently posted a side-by-side comparison of the game’s main character, Aloy, in her remastered form and her previous generation self. It appears that Aloy’s face is now more textured in the remaster, although some users have noted that her clothing seems more detailed in the PS4 version. The discussion eventually reached Jan-Bart van Beek, a Studio and Art Director at Guerrilla Games who originally conceptualized Horizon Zero Dawn.

Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 Remaster Updates Aloy

In a tweet, van Beek clarified that Aloy’s revamped character design from Horizon Forbidden West was adapted with minor adjustments to lighting, skin tones, and hair effects to align more closely with the ambiance of Horizon Zero Dawn. Van Beek also pointed out that the motion blur settings were turned off in the PS4 screenshot shared by Mr Pyo, which accounts for the textures appearing less sharp in the PS5 version. Moreover, van Beek added that Aloy’s facial model was rescan using advanced 4D technology specifically for Horizon Forbidden West, which explains the differences between her original appearance in Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4.

In the revamped version of Horizon Zero Dawn, modifications made to Aloy’s model encompass a more polished texture on her hair compared to its appearance on PS4. As with the unveiling of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered itself, opinions among fans are split regarding which iteration of Aloy appears more appealing, and this debate is expected to persist as we approach the upgrade’s release in October’s final weeks.
