Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Isn’t Doing Very Well on PS5

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Isn't Doing Very Well on PS5

Key Takeaways

  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is among the least played PS5 console exclusives launched in 2024, as per a new report.
  • During its launch week, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered saw nearly 92% fewer PS5 players than The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.
  • Even on PC, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered was outperformed by the original game, further indicating lackluster sales.

As a long-time PS fan and avid gamer, I must admit I was quite excited when Sony announced the remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn for the PS5. Having played and loved the original back on my trusty PS4, I eagerly anticipated diving back into Aloy’s world with improved graphics and smoother gameplay. However, the recent report suggesting that it’s among the least played PS5 exclusives of 2024 has left me a bit puzzled.

A newly released study reveals that among the exclusive games launched for PlayStation 5 in 2024, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is one of the least sought-after titles. Despite Sony providing a $10 upgrade option from the original game to its remastered version, it appears that many PlayStation 5 gamers are not particularly drawn to it.

Initially released on the PlayStation 4 in 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn eventually found its way onto PCs three years later. Following the launch of the PS5 at the end of 2020, developers Guerrilla Games updated the game to run at a smoother 60fps when played via backwards compatibility on the new console. While many PS5 players were content with this upgrade, Sony believed there was more potential for Horizon Zero Dawn. Last month, they released an enhanced version of the game, titled Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, for both the PS5 and PC.

Despite the enhanced elements in the remastered version of “Horizon Zero Dawn,” some PlayStation users have questioned the necessity of a remaster for a 2017 game. This hesitance appears to have contributed to a relatively subdued response to the “Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered” on PS5, according to a recent report from TrueTrophies. By analyzing data from 3.5 million PlayStation Network accounts, the report placed “Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered” at the 10th spot in terms of weekly player count among the 13 exclusive titles launched on PS5 this year.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Reportedly Flops on PS5

2024 PS5 Console ExclusivesRelative Peak Weekly Player Count on PS5
The Last of Us Part II Remastered100% (benchmark)
Helldivers 2-19.5%
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth-32.9%
Black Myth: Wukong-46.8%
Astro Bot-55.2%
Stellar Blade-64.6%
Silent Hill: The Short Message-65.9%
Silent Hill 2 remake-74.1%
Rise of the Ronin-83.7%
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered-91.8%
Pacific Drive-97.5%
Concord-97.8%
Until Dawn remake-97.9%

Surprisingly, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered holds the number one spot on TrueTrophies’ chart of the most played PlayStation 5 exclusives in 2024, outperforming heavyweights like Black Myth: Wukong and Helldivers 2. In contrast to the Naughty Dog remaster, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered saw a significant drop in PS5 players, with only 91.8% fewer players during its launch week. Furthermore, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered didn’t even make it into the top 40 most popular PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games during that same week. So far, Sony has remained silent on the remaster’s commercial success, but one might speculate that they may not be too pleased with its performance.

However, it’s worth mentioning that TrueTrophies’ sample size of 3.5 million PSN accounts is quite miniscule compared to the 116 million monthly active users on PlayStation platforms, so this data shouldn’t be taken as absolute proof that Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered flopped on PS5. With the original Horizon Zero Dawn outperforming the remaster on PC, though, there isn’t much to suggest that it’s a huge success either.
