Houndoom’s Epic Greek Mythology Evolution in Pokemon Gen 10

Summary

  • Pokemon Gen 10, set in Greece, is primed to introduce a Cerberus-inspired cross-gen evolution for Houndoom.
  • Gen 10 may dive into Greek mythology for Pokemon forms, with the potential for Houndoom’s evolution.
  • Uncertainty surrounds Houndoom’s evolution due to the existing Mega Evolution; Gen 10 could break the trend.

For quite some time now, it’s been widely speculated that Pokemon Generation 10 would be released in 2026, marking the 30th anniversary of the series and featuring a setting inspired by the Mediterranean Sea, possibly in Europe. Initially, Italy was thought to be the likely location. However, following last year’s significant hack on Game Freak and Nintendo, classified details about the Pokemon series were exposed online, collectively referred to as the TeraLeak. These leaks hinted at Generation 10 being called “Gaia,” which is the name of the Earth goddess in Greek mythology. More recent leaks further suggest that Generation 10 will indeed be set in Greece, implying that a cross-generation evolution could very well take place.

If Centro Leaks’ tweet is accurate and Gen 10 indeed takes place in Greece, particularly the Cyclades Archipelago in the Aegean Sea, it’s reasonable to assume that some new and current Pokémon could draw inspiration from Greek mythology’s numerous monsters and creatures. Given the wealth of legendary Greek beasts that have shaped modern imagery, it seems fitting to utilize this resource – for instance, Houndoom from Gen 2 might receive a form or evolution influenced by Greek mythology.

Why Gen 10 Can’t Miss The Opportunity to Give Houndoom a Cross-Gen Evolution

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but appreciate the enduring appeal of Houndoom, either because of its distinctive design, the nostalgia it stirs in those who grew up with it, or perhaps the unique combination of Fire and Dark types it possesses. In the event that the rumored Gaia project, supposedly set in Greece as hinted by its name, is indeed true, Houndoom could make a fantastic candidate for a cross-generational evolution inspired by the legendary three-headed dog, Cerberus.

In Greek mythology, Cerberus is frequently referred to as the “Dog of Hades,” primarily because it’s portrayed as a three-headed canine guarding the gates of the underworld, preventing the spirits of the deceased from escaping. Some stories suggest that Cerberus has flaming eyes or the power to exhale fire, which, along with its ominous role, would make it an ideal candidate for a Fire/Dark Pokemon like Houndoom. Given that Houndoom is a first-stage creature, having a cross-generational evolution in Generation 10 that adds two additional heads and other design alterations would be quite fitting.

Building on that idea, Houndoom’s body is adorned with multiple bones, which perfectly aligns with the notion of a guard dog for the underworld, intimidating spirits and ghosts. If Houndoom doesn’t evolve, introducing a regional variant or fake based on this concept would be intriguing at the very least. A Cerberus-inspired form or evolution for Houndoom seems like a perfect fit, and with Gen 10 of Pokemon rumored to have an otherworldly setting, it presents the ideal opportunity to bring this idea to life.

How Gen 10 Could Break The Mega Evolution Curse

It seems that Houndoom might not receive a cross-generation evolution due to its existing Mega Evolution. In the Pokemon series, none of the creatures with Mega Evolutions have ever evolved into something else. However, there are several Pokemon like Heracross, Pinsir, Sableye, and Mawile that can evolve if given the chance – Houndoom being one of them since it doesn’t fall under the category of those already in their second evolutionary stage. So, we’ll have to wait and see whether the series will break the Mega Evolution mold or not. If not, I believe Houndoom deserves an exceptional alternative evolution at least somewhere down the line.
