As a devoted fan of House of the Dragon, I have been thoroughly enjoying the second season of this brilliant HBO series. Each episode has been a thrilling journey into the world of Westeros, filled with intrigue, drama, and stunning visual effects. However, my excitement was dampened by the recent backlash against Episode 6, which received the lowest IMDb rating in the show’s history.
The sixth episode of “House of the Dragon” Season 2 currently holds the unwanted record for the lowest IMDb score among all episodes in the show’s run. Fans believe that a controversial scene featured in this latest installment might be the main cause for the large number of negative reviews.
The first season of “House of the Dragon,” produced by HBO, was met with widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, earning numerous awards. The second season began with great anticipation and received favorable feedback from both critics and viewers. However, the most recent episode, titled “Smallfolk,” has been met with harsh criticism from fans, resulting in a low rating of 6.2 – the lowest in the show’s history. While not as drastic as the backlash against “Game of Thrones” Season 8, this dip in ratings is significantly lower than previous episodes of the current season. Some believe that the controversial scene featured in “Smallfolk” may be the cause of the fan dissatisfaction.
Based on IMDb’s data, the sixth episode of House of the Dragon Season 2 currently has a score of 6.2. The primary cause for the negative reviews, particularly from Saudi Arabia and Iraq, seems to be the depiction of a same-sex kiss between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Lady Mysaria. Despite the scene’s brevity, it sparked controversy on social media and review sites. Out of the 7,900 votes received by IMDb, approximately 2.4 is the average rating from users in Saudi Arabia. Over 70% of these voters have given the episode a score of 1. A similar trend was observed among Iraqi users, with an average rating of 3.7 out of 10 based on more than 5,500 votes. Both countries prohibit same-sex marriage.
As someone who has worked in the entertainment industry for over a decade, I’ve witnessed firsthand how a show that emphasizes diversity, inclusivity, and representation can be met with criticism from certain groups of people. It’s disheartening, but unfortunately not surprising.
The reaction against “House of the Dragon” has been disappointing and may be disheartening for those involved in its production. From its debut episode onward, the show has delivered captivating content, maintaining its status as a formidable force in television. At present, it’s undecided if future episodes will include same-sex kissing scenes. Should they do so, it could lead to another wave of negative reviews from viewers.
All six episodes of House of the Dragon Season 2 are streaming exclusively on MAX.
