House of the Dragon: Why Did Alicent Send Daeron To Oldtown?

House of the Dragon: Why Did Alicent Send Daeron To Oldtown?

As a dedicated fan who has closely followed the tumultuous saga of House Targaryen, I can’t help but feel a deep empathy for Alicent Hightower, the Queen consort who rose to power through her father’s cunning machinations and her own political acumen. Her life is a testament to the complexities and uncertainties of the Game of Thrones, where every decision can have far-reaching consequences.

As a gamer, I found myself stepping into the shoes of Alicent Hightower, daughter of Otto, a loyal servant to the late King Jaehaerys. After Jaehaerys’ grandson, Viserys, claimed the throne, my father managed to keep his position. I remained at the Red Keep and formed a strong bond with Princess Rhaenyra. In the years that unfolded, Viserys declared Rhaenyra as his heir, setting the stage for the events depicted in House of the Dragon. Through my father’s clever scheming and planning, I eventually ascended to the position of Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

In the world of “House of the Dragon”, Alicent, who had four kids with King Viserys, started viewing Rhaenyra less as a friend and more like a stepdaughter. Their enmity deepened, leaving both women filled with resentment. Rhaenyra felt deceived when Alicent secretly wed her father. The Queen harbored animosity towards the Princess’ special treatment and always worried about the well-being of her own children. It was also revealed in this series that Alicent sent away her youngest, Daeron, to Oldtown for multiple reasons.

Where Is Daeron Targaryen In House of the Dragon?

House of the Dragon: Why Did Alicent Send Daeron To Oldtown?

In simpler terms, there has been much speculation among fans about whether Alicent’s youngest child, Daeron Targaryen, will appear in “House of the Dragon.” While his character was mentioned in Season 2, it was unclear what part he would play. However, it is now clear that Prince Daeron Targaryen will have a significant role in the events known as the Dance of the Dragons moving forward.

16-year-old Daeron Targaryen is a key figure in the narrative of ‘House of the Dragon’. He owns a dragon named Tessarion, who is soon to join the Hightowers’ army during the Dance of the Dragons. In the tales, Daeron is recognized for his bravery at the Battle of the Honeywine. Following this battle, Ormund Hightower bestowed upon him the title “Daeron the Daring”, in acknowledgement of Tessarion’s destructive rampage against the opposing Northern and Southern forces along the riverbank.

In contrast to other Targaryen-Hightower offspring, Daeron was brought up removed from the chaotic Red Keep environment, shielded from potential bitterness arising from political maneuvering. Instead, he grew up under the care of the Hightowers in Oldtown, a region known as the Reach, where he followed the Faith of the Seven. Initially, Daeron was Robert Hightower’s ward and later became Ormund’s son. It is his religious upbringing that likely inspires Alicent’s brother, Gwayne Hightower, to describe him as “wholesome” and “strong.”

In the series ‘House of the Dragon’, Alicent finds herself constantly watchful due to King Aegon II’s unpredictable nature. Meanwhile, Aemond exhibits a lack of self-control. Neither boy shows kindness, and Helaena maintains her distance as the dreamer. The children Alicent has aren’t what she desired, and Daeron is miles away in Oldtown. She finds it challenging to guide Aegon II, and Otto, after being dismissed as Hand, subtly mentions Prince Aegon during season 2, episode 2, “Rhaenyra the Cruel”.

The High towers remain resilient, and they have a young one among them who might respond positively to guidance. It’s possible that Daeron could lend assistance in the days ahead.

Why Was Daeron Sent To Oldtown?

Alicent talks to her brother Gwayne, which helps her understand things better. Later, before meeting Ser Criston Cole again, Alicent inquires about Daeron from Gwayne. It seems Daeron has been staying with the Hightowers in Oldtown because he was sent there as a ward. Alicent is pleased to learn that Daeron is a kind person, as her brother mentions in the sixth episode of season 2 of “House of the Dragon,” titled “Smallfolk.”

I’m quite formidable, resourceful, and can handle both my gaming controller as well as my strategic thinking. My skills are admired not just on the battlefield, but also among the gaming community, I dare say. Above all, I’m a kind soul.

It makes sense to send Daeron to Oldtown given the escalating turmoil at the Red Keep. Daeron was born following Alicent’s harrowing experiences in the Red Keep, which led her to become overly cautious as a mother. This caution stemmed from Otto’s alarming statements, such as his warning that “‘She [Rhaenyra] will have to put your children to the sword.’” After Otto was dismissed as Hand by King Viserys and Rhaenyra’s son, Lucerys, blinded Aemond, Alicent grew increasingly concerned for her children’s safety. She held her husband, Viserys, accountable for not punishing Prince Lucerys adequately, which further fueled her protective instincts.

During the later years of King Viserys’ rule, Alicent found herself occupied with three children, often standing in for the king, and participating in the Small Council alongside the Hand. Born and raised at the heart of Faith in Oldtown, Alicent, being mindful of Aegon’s character development, sought to instill strong moral values in her youngest child. As she confided in Gwayne, “I find kindness a trait that seems lacking in his brothers.”

Above many others, nurturing the young Princeling within the Hightower family proved to be a wise choice. This action greatly enhanced their reputation and boosted their status not only with the Lord of the Reach but also throughout the entire Realm. Raising a prince from the Targaryen dynasty was an immense honor for them. (Paraphrased)
