How 1 Gen 3 Pokemon Reshaped Difficulty Discourse in Pokemon Games, Even 24 Years Later

I’ve always loved Pokemon, and while the games aren’t usually super hard – they’re made for everyone to enjoy, after all – that doesn’t mean you can’t make them challenging! The Pokemon community is amazing at coming up with creative ways to play, like setting rules for themselves to make things tougher. There’s one challenge run, created way back 16 years ago, that’s become super famous – it’s even named after a Pokemon from the third generation that’s getting pretty old now, almost 24 years old!

With the Pokémon series celebrating its 30th anniversary next month, it’s become clear that its history shows a pattern of both sticking to familiar formulas and occasionally taking bold chances. While Pokémon games are often seen as predictable, with each new generation feeling similar to the last, players have created ways to make the experience more challenging and interesting. The most well-known of these is the Nuzlocke challenge, a set of self-imposed rules designed to increase difficulty and add excitement.

24 Years Later, Nuzleaf’s Claim to Fame is Still the Nuzlocke Pokemon Challenge

Nuzleaf isn’t a particularly well-known Pokémon from the third generation. As a Pokémon that evolves from one form and into another, and with a Grass and Dark typing, it doesn’t stand out in battles. It was only available in Pokémon Ruby, wasn’t used by any important characters in the Hoenn region, and its stats aren’t very strong. Despite this, Nuzleaf has unexpectedly become the face of the popular Pokémon challenge, cementing its place in the series in a way the developers probably didn’t anticipate.

The Origins of the Nuzlocke

The Nuzlocke challenge began in 2010 when college student Nick Franco wanted to make playing Pokemon Ruby more difficult. He documented his playthrough online as a webcomic, using a set of self-imposed rules. Franco went by the screen name ‘Nuzlocke’ for the comic, and featured a Nuzleaf character designed after John Locke from the show Lost. This combination of names is how the ‘Nuzlocke’ challenge—a specific way to play Pokemon with these rules—got its name.

What are the Rules of a Nuzlocke Challenge

  • Catch only the first Pokemon encountered in a new area
  • If a Pokemon faints, it’s considered dead and must be released
  • Players must nickname all their Pokemon to form more emotional bonds with them
  • No soft resets or third-party hacking
  • No trading
  • A full party wipe is a game over, and the run ends

Nuzlocke challenges aim to make playing Pokemon more exciting by adding real consequences. To achieve this, the rules focus on making each decision matter. Players can only catch the very first Pokemon they find in each area, which forces them to be strategic with a potentially limited team. Normally, a fainted Pokemon isn’t a big deal, but in a Nuzlocke, fainted Pokemon are permanently released, making every battle much more tense. While optional in regular gameplay, Nuzlockes encourage players to name their Pokemon, helping them feel more connected to their team.

Players can make a Nuzlocke challenge even harder by adding extra rules. For example, they might choose not to use healing items during battles or limit their Pokémon’s levels for each gym leader fight.

Variation of the Nuzlocke

  • Ironmon Challenge
  • Wonderlocke
  • Soul Link

Since Franco first created the Nuzlocke challenge, other content creators have built upon its rules to design their own unique playthroughs. Twitch streamer iateyourpie came up with the Ironmon Challenge, which combines the Nuzlocke format with a randomized Pokémon game. This means players face unpredictable Pokémon encounters and movesets. This combination has become very popular, and many fan-made Pokémon games now include both Nuzlocke and randomizer features.

As players discovered the Wonder Trade feature in Pokemon X and Y, a new challenge called the Wonderlocke emerged. It follows the standard Nuzlocke rules, but with an added twist: any Pokemon caught must be immediately traded away to a random player. This introduces even more uncertainty to the game. Another cooperative variation, the Soul Link, allows two players to each play their own game. When they catch Pokemon in the same areas, those Pokemon become linked – if one player’s linked Pokemon faints, the other player must release their corresponding Pokemon.

How the Nuzlocke Changed the Discourse Surrounding Difficulty in the Pokemon Series

Pokemon Generations Have Gotten Easier Over Time

Nuzlocke challenges have become popular within the Pokemon community because recent games haven’t been very difficult. While Pokemon games were never known for being super challenging, the newer versions have become even easier, guiding players through most of the gameplay. This change explains the growth of Nuzlocke variations – many dedicated Pokemon fans are familiar with how the games work and are looking for fresh, more difficult experiences.

Recent Pokémon games have tried to be more player-friendly, but these changes have unintentionally made the Nuzlocke challenge—a self-imposed difficult mode—harder to overcome. For example, Pokémon games starting with Generation 7 give Pokémon a chance to survive otherwise fatal attacks if they have a high friendship level with the player. This makes standard gameplay easier, but also adds an extra layer of risk to Nuzlocke runs like those in Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee.

The Pokemon Legends Series is a Step in the Right Direction for Pokemon’s Difficulty

While recent traditional Pokemon games, such as Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, remain relatively easy and follow a familiar pattern, the Pokemon Legends series has become popular with players seeking a more difficult experience. Pokemon Legends: Arceus raised the stakes with freely roaming, aggressive Pokemon – including powerful Alpha Pokemon that attack on sight – creating more intense gameplay. Pokemon Legends: Z-A continues this trend with challenging Rogue Mega Evolution battles. Though Pokemon Legends delivers the higher difficulty many fans desire, the core Pokemon games haven’t yet incorporated that level of challenge into their standard gameplay.
