How a Batman: Arkham Origins Remake Could Correct Its Worst Mistake

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark and gritty world of Gotham City, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when I look back at my time with Batman: Arkham Origins. The game was a promising addition to the Arkham series, but its multiplayer woes have left a lasting impact that still echoes today.

In the same vein as other games set within the Arkham universe, Batman: Arkham Origins boasts a variety of achievements linked to its storyline and challenge mode. However, it takes this concept a notch higher by incorporating extremely challenging gameplay tasks that players must conquer in the Dark Knight System’s Shadow Vigilante, Gotham Protector, Worst Nightmare, and World’s Greatest Detective tracks. These tracks can be tricky to unlock if not completed in precise and stringent ways, with each rank requiring completion in a specific sequence, particularly as failure to complete them in this manner may lock players out of certain achievements.

The Dark Knight System introduces a level of intricacy to gameplay experiences, making them enjoyable for those who enjoy strategizing and being mindful as they advance through the narrative. However, some achievements in the game can no longer be earned since the multiplayer mode for Batman: Arkham Origins was discontinued. If rumors about a remake of Batman: Arkham Asylum are true, it would be great if Arkham Origins also received a remake to correct this significant oversight.

Batman: Arkham Origins’ Multiplayer Woes Condemn It to This Day

Currently, there are whispers that only a remake of Arkham Asylum is being discussed. If this rumor holds true, it’s not unthinkable that Batman: Arkham Origins could also get a remake down the line. Fans have been yearning for a remake since the remasters of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City were bundled together as the Return to Arkham collection.

The game Origins isn’t ugly, and it can be played on PC, but if WB Games Montreal is planning a prequel, it could greatly benefit from an updated remake. This would allow them to reconsider and reintroduce achievements, ensuring that no multiplayer components are necessary for 100% completion. The inclusion of a multiplayer mode in Origins, which allowed players to take on the roles of Batman and Robin or henchmen led by Joker or Bane (both playable within this mode), was an intriguing addition to the Arkhamverse.

In my experience, although it may have been widely acclaimed or not, its absence from the game “Origins” might not have been entirely disheartening if that wasn’t the case where some accomplishments remain incomplete and grayed out for those who didn’t pursue them earlier. To add to the frustration, during the campaign of “Origins“, players are still reminded of multiplayer rewards they earn by sabotaging Penguin’s arms caches across Gotham City.

Batman: Arkham Origins Has a Wrong to Right and a Remake Can Facilitate That

The challenging nature of unlocking achievements in Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight is due to the numerous ones tied to challenge mode medals across multiple playable characters, but they are still achievable. If a remake of Batman: Arkham Origins were to reintroduce multiplayer, it would be wise to exclude achievements to avoid situations where players are unable to achieve 100% completion if the game is delisted before they can unlock all the achievements.

If a remake of the game Origins were to be created, it’s uncertain whether multiplayer would be included at all, given that this seems highly improbable despite many players expressing interest in it. A remake lacking multiplayer might feel incomplete and less appealing to fans, similar to how cooperative play appears essential for the potential Resident Evil 5 remake. Whether Origins will receive the necessary updates to cater to its fanbase remains to be seen.
