The new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is now playing in theaters, and it lives up to the high standard set by the first two films. It continues the story from Avatar: The Way of Water and brings that storyline to a conclusion.
In Fire and Ash, the story continues to follow the Metkayina Na’vi, while also introducing a new group called the Mangkwan Clan, known as the Ash people. Following the conflict with Colonel Miles Quaritch in The Way of Water, Jake Sully now faces a new threat from the hostile Mangkwan Clan. Fire and Ash delivers an exciting showdown between Jake Sully and both Quaritch and the Mangkwan Clan, with a spectacular and action-packed finale that resolves the storylines begun in The Way of Water. This leaves audiences eager to see what James Cameron has planned for the future of Avatar in the fourth film.
Avatar: Fire and Ash Keeps Colonel Quaritch’s Fate Ambiguous
Yeah, It Means That Quaritch Might Very Well Return In Avatar 4
Colonel Quaritch has always seen himself as a hunter, and even being reborn as a Na’vi hasn’t changed him much. He’s still fueled by his anger towards the Na’vi people and Jake Sully. However, the birth of his son, Spider, revealed a more human side to Quaritch, as seen in ‘Fire and Ash’. This love briefly leads him to work with Jake, but their alliance is short-lived.
To gain an advantage, Quaritch allies himself with the Mangkwan Clan, trading weapons for their assistance in fighting Jake Sully and the Metkayina. Despite his Marine background, he fully adopts the ways of the Na’vi people by the film’s end. His relationship with Varang, the Mangkwan leader, heavily influences this transformation. While Sully once encouraged Quaritch to understand the Na’vi, he envisioned a connection to their positive qualities, not the more aggressive aspects.
Sully, don’t you realize you’re turning against your own people? Do you honestly believe you belong with them? It’s time to see the truth.
During the final battle, Quaritch doesn’t fight Sully as a human, but rather as an Na’vi. Sully nearly defeats Quaritch in the climax of Fire and Ash, but the fight is interrupted when Spider is in danger of falling to his death, and they both work together to save him. This shared moment leads to a lessening of animosity between Sully and Quaritch. When Sully’s family arrives, instead of attempting to reconcile, Quaritch jumps from the floating island. While it appears he falls to his death, we don’t actually see a body, and considering the floating islands are above an ocean, it’s possible he survived.
Okay, so that ambiguous ending with Quaritch? I’m convinced James Cameron is holding him back for Avatar 4. There were even moments where you could see the guy genuinely considering what it meant to live like the Na’vi. Honestly, a full-on redemption arc for Quaritch, where he actually connects with Eywa? That would be amazing in the next film, and I’m really hoping that’s where they’re going with it.
There’s Still So Much We Don’t Know About Eywa
Avatar 4 Might Explore The Connection Between Kiri And Eywa
Eywa is considered the guiding spirit of Pandora, connecting all living things on the planet. In the first film, she defended Pandora by using its plants and animals against the invading forces, and she did so again in the third. While Jake Sully brought the Na’vi clans together and the Tulkun whales joined the fight, they still faced overwhelming military power. Ultimately, it was Kiri who reached out to Eywa, and with the help of Spider and Tuk, she convinced Eywa to intervene and save the Na’vi people.
We’ve seen Eywa’s power, but it’s still unclear why Eywa was blocking Kiri. Kiri desperately wants to connect with Eywa, but each attempt causes her to have a seizure. The recent film confirms Kiri wasn’t born in the traditional way – Eywa essentially created Kiri from nothing. While many believe Kiri is Eywa’s child, it’s puzzling why Eywa would reject her for so long. Furthermore, it’s a mystery how Kiri was able to control the forest creatures to rescue Spider. These unanswered questions suggest there’s much more to learn about Eywa. There are still many mysteries surrounding Eywa and Kiri, and director James Cameron may delve deeper into this storyline and provide answers in Avatar 4.
The last scene of Fire and Ash offers a stunning view of Pandora from space. This wide shot emphasizes a point Jake Sully made to Colonel Quaritch: we still have so much to learn about the Na’vi people and their world. This final image, combined with Sully’s words, suggests that James Cameron plans to introduce new Na’vi clans and explore other regions of Pandora in Avatar 4 and future installments.
While the ending of Avatar: Fire and Ash hints at what’s next for characters like Quaritch and Kiri, the fourth Avatar movie needs to offer much more than just a continuation of that story. Just as The Way of Water introduced a completely new ocean world, Avatar 4 will probably take us to a different part of Pandora with brand new creatures and landscapes. This explains why the release date is set for December 21, 2029 – almost four years after Fire and Ash – giving Cameron time to develop a truly unique experience.
