After a long wait filled with speculation, the free-to-play battle royale mode for Battlefield 6 is now available. Called Battlefield: RedSec, it launches with Season 1 and puts players in Fort Lyndon, a massive map with unique locations, challenging missions, and 99 other competitors all fighting to be the last one standing.
Longtime fans of the Battlefield series might recall that Battlefield 6: RedSec isn’t the first time the franchise has tried a battle royale mode. Back in March 2019, Battlefield V introduced ‘Firestorm.’ While players generally enjoyed the mode itself, Electronic Arts’ support for it after launch wasn’t well-received. Now, looking back after six years, it’s interesting to see how well Firestorm holds up and how Battlefield 6: RedSec improves upon what it started.

How Battlefield 6: RedSec’s Fort Lyndon Compares to Firestorm‘s Halvoy
As a big Battlefield fan, one of the first things I noticed jumping into Battlefield 6: RedSec after playing Battlefield V: Firestorm is just how different the settings are. Firestorm really leaned into the World War II vibe, which meant everything from the guns and tanks to the character outfits and maps felt like it came straight out of that time period. But RedSec is totally different – it’s set in the present day, around 2027-2028, so all the weapons, vehicles, and even how the maps look are based on modern, current-day designs. It really makes RedSec feel fresh and new!
Halvoy, the map from Firestorm, and Fort Lyndon from RedSec are quite different in design. Fort Lyndon appears to be even larger than Firestorm’s Halvoy—and definitely has more points of interest. Halvoy featured 15 interesting locations spread across its mountains, but Fort Lyndon boasts 21, including diverse areas like golf courses, factories, shopping centers, and harbors.
Both Firestorm and RedSec feature a dangerous event called ‘The Storm,’ but they portray it a bit differently. In Firestorm, The Storm is a visible ring of fire that damages structures, harms the player, and makes it hard to see. RedSec, however, depicts The Storm as a continuous circle of explosions.
Battlefield 6: RedSec Features Exclusive Gameplay Mechanics
Firestorm, from Battlefield V, and Battlefield 6: RedSec both offer battle royale experiences, but they feel quite different when you’re playing. While Firestorm came out in 2019, its gameplay still works well, though it isn’t quite as polished as what you’ll find in RedSec.
The RedSec mode in Battlefield 6 introduces several new features, like the ability to drag and revive downed teammates behind cover. Unlike in the Firestorm mode, classes in RedSec aren’t just cosmetic; they give players distinct advantages and skills. For example, the Assault class can use a grenade launcher and deploy ladders.
Battlefield 6: RedSec introduces battle royale features not found in the earlier Firestorm mode, including customizable weapon drops, Redeploy Towers, and missions that give teams valuable rewards. While these features are now common in games like Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Fortnite, they were less typical when Firestorm launched in 2019.
Battlefield 6: RedSec Features New Battle Royale Modes
While Battlefield V’s Firestorm battle royale let you play solo, with a partner (duo), or in a squad, Battlefield 6: RedSec introduces some new and improved versions of the mode.
- Battle Royale – Only Duos and Quads at launch, no Solos or Trios
- Initiation Battle Royale – A tutorial mode with bots that features a 48-player maximum
- Gauntlet – Eight squads complete four sets of missions. The two squads with the lowest points after each mission are eliminated
Battlefield 6: RedSec Is Free-To-Play
The biggest difference between Battlefield V: Firestorm and Battlefield 6: RedSec is that RedSec is free to play. Firestorm was well-received when it came out in March 2019, but you had to buy Battlefield V to play it.
While Call of Duty: Black Ops 4‘s Blackout mode also required purchase, the core game itself wasn’t as controversial. Fortnite had already popularized the free-to-play model nearly two years before Firestorm launched. Adding to the challenge, EA released Apex Legends only a month after Firestorm, offering a comparable, more realistic battle royale experience—and it was free.
Making Battlefield 6: RedSec free-to-play is a smart decision, especially now. Releasing it just two weeks after Battlefield 6 lets it benefit from the positive reception of the original game and quickly attract players. It’s a good strategy because it avoids undermining the initial sales by offering a free version too soon, while still leveraging familiar gameplay.
