Highlights

  • Melee Macchiato Perk brings potential for innovation, but must offer valuable buffs to stand out among classics.

As a die-hard Call of Duty fan since the early days, I’ve seen it all – from the thrilling campaign modes to the intense multiplayer battles, and let’s not forget about the addictive Zombies mode that has kept me up late into the night for over a decade. So, when I heard about Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and its renewed focus on the beloved Zombies mode, my heart skipped a beat.

Back in 2008 with the launch of Call of Duty: World at War, Call of Duty: Zombies has been a standout feature of the series for more than a decade. It offers an addictive mix of simple gameplay and intricate mechanics that have kept players hooked, whether they’re veterans or newcomers. However, some recent releases seem to overlook what initially made the mode so popular. Nevertheless, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 appears to grasp exactly how to win over fans right from the start.

Before the official launch of single-player or multiplayer features, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is focusing on unveiling its Zombies mode first, with a detailed gameplay demonstration scheduled for August 8. Treyarch appears eager to demonstrate their fresh take on the Zombies concept, following a somewhat underwhelming performance by Modern Warfare 3’s Zombies. Instead of relying on past successes, Treyarch seems intent on introducing something novel, with the newly-announced Melee Macchiato Perk being one such example. However, this new Black Ops 6 Perk has some significant history to surmount.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Melee Macchiato Perk Needs to Be a Worthwhile Addition

Call of Duty Hasn’t Had The Best History With New Perks

In “Call of Duty: World at War,” the Shi No Numa map introduced the concept of Perk-a-Cola machines in the “Call of Duty: Zombies” mode, which offer players unique abilities or enhancements. Treyarch successfully designed these Perks from the beginning, and the ones from Shi No Numa are still considered highly valuable more than a decade later. Perks such as Juggernog, Speed Cola, and Quick Revive remain essential choices for many “Call of Duty: Zombies” gaming sessions.

In Call of Duty: Black Ops, a variety of fresh Perks were incorporated into the game mode, with some like Mule Kick, which enabled players to carry an extra weapon, quickly proving their usefulness, and others such as Deadshot Daiquiri becoming less popular over time. This marked the start of a disappointing pattern in Call of Duty: Zombies. As each new version of the mode was released, a fresh batch of Perks would be introduced, but all too frequently, these new Perks were overlooked in favor of the original ones that had been available since the beginning.

Despite some notable enhancements over time, several recent Perks in Call of Duty: Zombies have faced a recurring issue. At their peak performance, the new Zombies Perks often don’t offer as much value as classic options such as Juggernog, Speed, and Quick Revive. With a limited number of slots to utilize, these less beneficial Perks tend to be overlooked by players.

How Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Melee Macchiato Can Be Better

For the debut Perk in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, it’s crucial that the Melee Macchiato avoids repeating the mistakes of previous Zombies Perks. Immediately demonstrating its usefulness is key, and this can be achieved by providing players with a significant advantage. While increasing melee damage could work, it might not be particularly engaging. A more captivating option would be to let players melee multiple enemies simultaneously, perhaps creating a shockwave with each strike. If Melee Macchiato lacks a truly potent bonus, there’s a risk that it will end up as another overlooked Perk in Black Ops 6.
