At Gamescom 2024, fans got a sneak peek at the upcoming fifth main installment of the Dark Pictures Anthology, titled Directive 8020, developed by Supermassive Games. Being the initial game for Season 2 of the anthology, Directive 8020 aims to make a lasting impact. This transition from Season 1 to Season 2 is partly due to Supermassive’s constant endeavor to refine and enhance its underlying mechanics.
Game Rant had a chat with Dan McDonald, the executive producer, about the upcoming game at Gamescom. Since it’s the first time the Dark Pictures series ventures into space, McDonald emphasized the unique challenges this new environment presents. One of the major aspects is the audio, which can significantly impact the overall experience, and he highlighted how fortunate Supermassive Games are to have such a skilled audio team on the project.
Sound Will be Crucial in Directive 8020
In various forms of entertainment like films, series, and games that fall under the horror genre, there’s always a complex web of elements being managed simultaneously. What sets these projects apart from others is the need to generate an intense level of suspense which is not typically found in other genres. Achieving this is quite challenging, but when done correctly, it can create a genuinely chilling experience that resonates with viewers on an emotional, almost subconscious level. The Dark Pictures Anthology has accomplished this before, and it seems particularly crucial for the impact of the experience in Directive 8020.
1. The vast expanse of space is a lonely, barren landscape, and it appears that this solitude will be a recurring motif in the game. McDonald emphasized the importance of sound in creating an immersive experience, stating, “We invest a significant amount of effort in working with actors on set to record lines accurately and without distractions. In the past, we’ve had issues like helicopters flying overhead. Now, we can say we’re essentially in a bunker.” He further elaborated on this by saying,
”We do a lot of pre-production and research to find out what the multiple effects should sound like. For example, the creaking of a ship… all of those things are layered together.”
Similar to other science fiction horror ventures like “Dead Space”, our project, “Directive 8020”, delves into themes of solitude and powerlessness. As McDonald clarified, our production will occasionally emphasize these same themes.
This captivating science fiction backdrop, coupled with the eerie sensation of confinement reminiscent of a spaceship, hints at imminent danger lurking beyond the flimsy metal barriers.
Working with Supermassive Games, known for creating meticulously polished, terrifyingly immersive horror titles, feels like a privilege to McDonald due to the exceptional talent within their audio team. It’s no surprise that Supermassive’s games continue to grow in scale and quality, as they consistently refine their skills and gain new insights with every game they produce.
