How Do You Get Cores in Frostpunk 2?

As a seasoned survivor of the Frostland, I’ve weathered countless storms, scavenged for resources, and watched my fellow citizens struggle to stay warm and fed. But nothing has tested my mettle quite like the elusive Cores in Frostpunk 2. These enigmatic components are the keys to unlocking our city’s potential, yet they’re as rare as a warm day in the Frostland.

Just like the steam cores in the original Frostpunk, Frostpunk 2 features Cores – a scarce resource that you can neither mine nor manufacture on your own. These Cores are crucial for acquiring advanced technologies and upgrading your city’s infrastructure. Without Cores, the growth and survival of your city would be significantly impeded.

In contrast to Coal, Oil, or resources in Frostpunk 2’s New London, Cores aren’t a naturally occurring element. Instead, they are essential components of pre-Frost technology and cannot be produced; they can only be discovered. Here’s how you can find more Cores in Frostpunk 2.

How To Get Cores in Frostpunk 2

As Core production, extraction, or acquisition is not possible via any other method, your only option for obtaining them is to venture on expeditions into the treacherous Frostland.

To embark on exploratory journeys, you must first progress through Chapter 1 with Frostbeaking, reaching the city’s outskirts and establishing Exploration Sectors, which we can refer to as Logistics Districts. Each district built will supply Frostland Expedition Teams for your ventures.

As an enthusiast, I often find that cores are primarily discovered in regions with elevated threat levels. However, these zones can also be hazardous for my Frostland Teams. To explore a node outside your city and uncover its details, including potential discoveries, simply click on it. If you notice a lantern-like icon tinted blue, the site might harbor cores.

To explore Dangerous and Deadly areas, you’ll need a minimum of 20 and 25 Frostland Teams, respectively. Send expeditions to these areas and wait for the teams to return. They’ll often bring back a handful of Cores.

As you progress through the primary storyline of Frostpunk 2, you may encounter Core deposits in settlements such as Winterhome; however, these locations are quite distant.

How To Use Cores in Frostpunk 2

The primary function of Cores is to enhance the Generator within the Central District and build unique structures such as the Deep Melting Drill or the Pressurized Coal Liquefactor.

The Deep Melting Drills let your Extraction Districts access Deep Deposits that increase your resource yield, while the Pressurized Coal Liquefactor lets you convert Coal into Oil. These buildings are a must-have to ensure your city has enough resources to survive.

Additionally, Cores are utilized in setting up settlements or Outposts. Given their rarity, it’s advisable to employ them sparingly when unavoidable. In times of dire need for Cores, consider disassembling structures that initially required them, but this should be a last resort. Disassembling buildings consumes time and might have detrimental effects on your city.
