How Dragon Ball Sparking Zero's Roster Compares to Budokai Tenkaichi's

As a lifelong Dragon Ball fan and avid gamer, I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs in the series’ gaming adaptations. The Budokai Tenkaichi series holds a special place in my heart due to its massive rosters and diverse character selection. So, when I heard about Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, I was naturally skeptical. But after digging into the latest leaks and trailers, I must admit, I’m starting to get excited.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero marks the return of the cherished Budokai Tenkaichi series of combat games. While it’s not just a spiritual successor, it’s undeniable that future games will be compared to it. However, only time will tell if Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero can match the greatness of its earlier versions.

Since its debut, the “Budokai Tenkaichi” series has been renowned for its expansive character rosters. Each installment boasts a vast array of playable characters, and the diversity of these rosters is truly impressive. Given the escalating costs associated with game development, it was believed that any potential sequel might struggle to meet this standard. However, based on early leaks, it appears that “Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero” might just defy expectations.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero’s Roster Could Compete With Budokai Tenkaichi

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi Has Always Had Fan Favorite Rosters

As a dedicated Dragon Ball fan, I can’t help but marvel at the sheer scale of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi. Even for a game released back in 2005, boasting an impressive roster of 64 characters is no small feat. With the enduring popularity of Dragon Ball, it’s only natural that each new game in the series would strive to capitalize on this acclaim. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, standing tall as the latest installment, boasts a record-breaking roster of 98 fighters, each ready to engage in epic battles. However, when you factor in the multiple forms that many characters possess, this number swells significantly, reaching an astounding total of 161 playable characters.

In its time, this was almost unimaginable and remains exceptionally scarce even today. To illustrate, Dragon Ball FighterZ initially offered a core roster of 21 characters, with another 3 to be unlocked by players. Even after all DLC seasons had concluded, the game boasted just 44 characters. Although “44 characters” might seem insignificant compared to many popular fighting games in the mainstream, it underscores why Budokai Tenkaichi stands out as such an anomaly.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Could Live Up to the Hype

Thanks to a trusted source known as Hype, information on the final character lineup for Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero has been leaked online. The leak includes an image of the game’s packaging that reveals various details about the title, such as its release roster size. As per this image, it appears that at least 180 characters will be available in Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero upon its launch.

In comparison, this surpasses all anticipations, even outshining the extensive cast of Budokai Tenkaichi 3. Given that context, it’s reasonable to assume that the count incorporates various forms and duplicate characters. It’s worth noting that the original roster in fact includes numerous such variations, spanning from Super Saiyans to Mechanized Frieza. This excess isn’t a letdown, as these forms have consistently been a hallmark of this series. Although Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero might meet its predecessor’s roster standards, the issue of character diversity remains unresolved.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Still Has Some Work to Do

It’s good news that this issue has been addressed by recent updates. For instance, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero failed to introduce any characters or elements from Dragon Ball GT for a while following its unveiling. This led some fans to speculate whether the universe of GT would be confined to DLC expansions, or if it might be disregarded altogether.

A fresh trailer has corrected the misconception that GT would be sidelined, as it now features its key figures prominently. Instead of focusing on the game’s missing movie characters, attention was later drawn back with the latest trailer for Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero. Similarly, the appearance of lesser-known characters such as Bergamo has alleviated many concerns.

Currently, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero excels in both scale and variety. However, it’s true that Budokai Tenkaichi 3 outshines Sparking Zero in the diversity category due to its inclusion of lesser-known characters like Appule and Hirudegarn. As for Sparking Zero, it hasn’t yet tapped into the potential of its newer additions since most characters from the Super manga remain unexplored. Fortunately, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero can potentially expand its roster through DLC updates, emulating the anticipated Budokai Tenkaichi 4.
