This era witnessed the emergence of gruesome series like “Saw,” as well as adaptations from Japanese originals such as “The Ring.” Yet, among all these popular franchises of the time, it was undoubtedly “Final Destination” that reigned supreme.

The intriguing and fulfilling concept behind the “Final Destination” franchise was so compelling that it led to multiple sequels being produced. In these films, a group of individuals manage to survive a catastrophe they were initially meant to perish in, but then find themselves targeted for death by an unseen force that systematically eliminates them one by one. Despite the formula remaining consistent across all installments, each movie in the series introduces subtle variations. In these films, it’s never made clear why the main characters have these premonitions, but regardless, the entire story revolves around Alex trying to identify who will be targeted next. Law enforcement is probing him as he seems to always show up at catastrophe sites. The only other detail provided about this world is that if someone manages to survive, they move to the back of the line, and then the next person in line meets their demise.

Beware The BBQ

In “Final Destination 2,” there’s an intriguing highway accident scene involving a log truck that leads to a massive car collision. Such chaos wouldn’t be replicated even in the most realistic racing simulations. The story follows Kimberly and her friends traveling for spring break, but unfortunately, everyone else dies except her. She manages to rescue some strangers by creating a commotion on the road. This movie is unique in the series as it features Clear Rivers, a character from the previous film who survives, but she too meets her end in this sequel.

In this case, there’s a novelty – people are now able to foresee Death in their visions, although Kimberly still tends to lead the way. Additionally, it’s been established that suicide is not an option for those under the curse, as illustrated when one character, Eugene, pointed a gun at his head but found all bullets to be duds. Lastly, this film introduced an interesting twist – someone who was saved by a character marked by Death can end up getting killed instead, such as in the BBQ explosion scenario.

In a significant step forward, Final Destination 3 incorporated the concept of photograph warnings. The first fatal accident occurred at a senior-themed school fair, where a malfunctioning rollercoaster resulted in the deaths of all its passengers. In this flick, I was the last man standing, determinedly attempting to shield my pals and strangers from peril on the railroad tracks. The climactic twist, a mind-blowing cinematic moment, was an unexpected movie theater explosion – a first in scale for the series. Yet, despite that shocker, my trio and I ultimately met our match with a ruthless truck, eerily echoing the finale of Final Destination 3, where no soul was spared.

As a dedicated cinephile, I found Final Destination 5 to be an intriguing addition to the franchise with several compelling revelations that expanded the series’ lore. One such reveal was that the film served as a prequel to the original, where we see the plane crash that initiated the storyline. In this instance, Sam and his girlfriend, Molly, were on their way to Paris because of Sam’s new chef job. It is here, unfortunately, that the fateful plane explosion takes place.

The movie opens with a bridge collapsing, and in Sam’s unusual vision, there is a survivor named Molly. Previously, no character had survived in someone else’s vision. Furthermore, it was set up that if a survivor took another person’s life, they would gain their lifespan. However, as you may recall, Molly eventually perishes, and even those who ended lives met their own demise, so the alteration to the rules was only temporary.

In the movie, a bridge crumbles at the start, and in Sam’s unique vision, there’s a survivor called Molly. Before this, no one had ever survived in someone else’s vision. Additionally, if a survivor killed another person, they would live longer by absorbing their lifespan. However, it should be noted that Molly does eventually pass away, and those who took lives also met their end, making the change to the rules only temporary.

Family Ties

The film “Final Destination: Bloodlines” marks a significant shift for the series, as it essentially serves as a prequel, particularly focusing on the early events similar to the fifth movie. Set in the 1960s, the story revolves around a woman named Iris who miraculously survives a restaurant tragedy. However, her foresight leads her to prevent the deaths of those involved, triggering a chain reaction in time. Since Death must now eliminate multiple family bloodlines one by one, this process spans over several decades.

In “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” the narrative commences with Death targeting the Campbell family, specifically Iris.
