In terms of its action-RPG narrative, Hogwarts Legacy skillfully balances nostalgia and authenticity. On one side, it offers a student simulator experience where players attend classes, traverse the Scottish Highlands, and delve into Hogsmeade as much as they wish – all while immersed in an atmosphere and aesthetic from late 1800s. Conversely, Hogwarts Legacy crafts a story so imaginative that it feels like it could fit seamlessly into any other enchanting, magical fantasy narrative. This blend of old and new elements reveals the promising potential that the series holds for future installments.
It’s unclear if there will be another game following Hogwarts Legacy that continues the story in the late 1800s or moves the narrative elsewhere in time. Given the upcoming adaptation of Harry Potter on HBO, it could be logical for future wizarding world games to align with this new storyline. One potential solution might be for the sequel to serve as a precursor to the HBO series, loosely setting the stage for its events. This approach would maintain Hogwarts Legacy’s unique departure from the story of The Boy Who Lived.
Hogwarts Legacy’s ‘Legacy’ May Be to End Up Where Harry Potter Begins
It’s understandable that one might initially view Hogwarts Legacy as a prequel to the Harry Potter series given its pre-event setting in the wizarding world. However, while the game delves deeply into Ancient Magic and predates Harry Potter significantly, making direct connections between the two challenging, it doesn’t hesitate to incorporate surnames and elements from the later lore that have since become familiar.
In other words, viewers will see Salazar Slytherin’s initial ideas for what later became known as the Chamber of Secrets unfold. Characters like Weasley and Black are ancestors of characters that are more commonly recognized from Harry Potter. Consequently, a sequel could delve deeper into the time when Tom Riddle attended Hogwarts and show how he subtly and covertly embarked on his path to becoming a dark lord, told through the eyes of the main character.
Given the lukewarm response to the Fantastic Beasts films, it’s not unreasonable to expect that upcoming wizarding world productions in movies, books, or video games might choose to bypass them.
Hogwarts Legacy’s Sequel Could Have a ‘Terrible… But Great’ Companion Character
If a sequel for Hogwarts Legacy were unveiled, setting it during the time Tom might have been a student, it would be almost impossible to ignore or bypass the fact that he’d become a significant character. In such a scenario, the sequel could tactfully avoid mentioning him and enable players to encounter him casually, as if he were just an ordinary NPC classmate.
An additional layer of excitement might come from allowing players to engage with Tom as a companion character, similar to Sebastian Sallow in Hogwarts Legacy, who has his own narrative path. However, unlike other interactive stories where dialogue choices can alter the storyline’s direction, players wouldn’t have that power over Tom’s tale. Yet, witnessing the unfolding of Tom’s journey as a peer would still be captivating.
If the television show based on Harry Potter sticks closely to the original story, then the sequel of Hogwarts Legacy could serve as a captivating introduction for those who wish to explore this world through gaming. In many aspects, it could also expand upon the lore that will be adapted in the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO. However, it remains to be seen if the wizarding world presented in Hogwarts Legacy is set around the same time as Harry Potter or even serves as a preview for the main storyline of the forthcoming Harry Potter series.
