As a seasoned gamer who has seen the rise and fall of countless heroes in multiplayer battle arenas, I can confidently say that Hawkeye in Marvel Rivals is shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with. With his one-shot potential and versatility in both range and close-quarters combat, he’s already making waves in the gaming community.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement as we inch closer to the release date for Marvel Rivals! Each day leading up to December 6 brings fresh, exhilarating announcements. The latest unveiling showcased the Hydra Erebus Base map and the addition of Hawkeye to the Duelist role. With his arrival in the super-hero-themed shooter, it seemed almost destined after an image of Hawkeye popped up on the Marvel Rivals website alongside Moon Knight before swiftly disappearing.
As Hawkeye prepares to join the roster of playable characters within a few short weeks, his skill set is sure to captivate fans of Clint Barton and enthusiasts of projectile-based characters. Following NetEase Games’ reveal of Hawkeye’s gameplay and abilities, it’s evident that he will be a formidable choice in the game. Although players can only guess how he will integrate into the overall strategy (meta) of the game, it seems that Hawkeye poses a significant threat whether engaged from a distance or up close.
Marvel Rivals’ Hawkeye Has Game-Changing Potential
Hawkeye Could Become Meta In Marvel Rivals
In the initial roster for Season 0 of Marvel Rivals, Hawkeye is the twenty-eighth character to be unveiled, out of a total of thirty-three characters. Among the identified characters, Barton (Hawkeye) appears to be developing into one of the most powerful Duelist characters, thanks to his ability to take down opponents with a single shot, using his primary fire, Piercing Arrow. At present, none of the other heroes possess the capability to eliminate other targets in a single shot.
To ensure fairness in the game, the creators have designed Hawkeye such that he can’t shoot preemptive angles. Instead, pulling back the bow builds up his damage output. A full charge is achieved by deliberately aiming at an opponent. This encourages thoughtful and precise shots, adding more strategy to the game. In this way, Marvel Rivals steers clear of debates about heroes who can kill with a single shot without having a target in their sight before firing.
Hawkeye’s talent, called Archer’s Concentration, amplifies his damage output as he focuses on a target for a longer period, and his bow’s shooting distance improves along with enhanced precision when drawing it further back.
How Hawkeye Performs in Close-Quarter Combat
The marksman is renowned for his skill with a bow and arrow but, as a wandering samurai, he’s equally adept with a sword. In the game, this is shown through two distinct skills. The first, called Crescent Slash (assigned to Left Shift), propels him forward to strike enemies into the air, which could be handy for finishing off opponents in specific locations. Secondly, Ronin Slash allows him to use a Wakizashi sword for melee attacks while simultaneously deflecting incoming projectiles. So, players of Marvel Rivals shouldn’t underestimate Hawkeye’s ability to handle close combat situations, and with Skyward Leap providing the agility to perform a double-jump, he can easily escape from tight spots.
In a more simplified way: Just like Overwatch’s initial Scatter Arrow skill, Hawkeye’s secondary fire, Blast Arrow, releases three explosive arrows that affect a wide area, causing damage to multiple enemies. However, unlike the Scatter Arrow, these arrows don’t ricochet or allow headshots, and they function as an area-of-effect ability instead. Additionally, Hypersonic Arrow damages targets as it passes through them, allowing it to hit several enemies at once and knock airborne characters like Storm and Iron Man from the sky.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that Barton’s ultimate ability, Hunter’s Sight, leaves trailing images of moving enemies. It seems like I can’t take them down with a headshot, but I can certainly deal damage to those projections, which in turn hurts the real targets too. The gaming community has been speculating that Black Widow, who might be unveiled soon, could also harm these “Afterimages” using her Team-Up Ability in Marvel Rivals, although this hasn’t been verified yet.
Ultimately, Hawkeye is well-rounded in nearly every regard as a projectile hero who can counter heroes with flight, engage in close combat, and get value from being at a distance. Still, he’s likely to be easily countered by flank heroes such as Star-Lord or Loki, a good Hela, and Vanguard characters who can face-tank most of the sharpshooter’s damage. With Hela being an S-Tier pick in Marvel Rivals‘ closed playtests, it will be interesting to see how Hawkeye compares to her hitscan capabilities. Regardless, his one-shot could be particularly game-changing when paired with characters with a stun, like Mantis.
