How Metaphor: ReFantazio Nails its Archetype Awakenings

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that I’ve witnessed some truly remarkable character transformations throughout my gaming journey, but none have left quite the impact that Metaphor: ReFantazio has managed to do. Hailing from the grand tradition of Persona and Shin Megami Tensei, this game has taken the concept of Archetype awakenings to a whole new level, crafting an experience that is as visually stunning as it is emotionally resonant.

In the world of Euchronia, the companions of ReFantazio come from a variety of backgrounds, reflecting different tribes and unique histories. Yet, they’ve all endured unimaginable hardships that resonate with the harsh realities of the United Kingdom. This shared struggle, influenced by both the protagonist and their own desire for change, propels them forward.

In simpler terms, the opening sequences of recent Persona games are undeniably intense. However, the game ReFantazio matches this intensity with its own awakening scenes featuring characters who demonstrate their power by pulling out their hearts physically. The ability to “stand strong against fear” is central to these awakenings, as each character embodies virtues that make them beacons for the king’s journey to the throne. During these awakenings, each ally must confront the most painful and frightening experiences of their past, making a promise to protect one another and the kingdom with their newly found strength and purpose.

Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Archetype Awakenings Are a Sight to Behold

“O Lodestar, O Thou Anguished Traveller…”

In the fictional realm of Metaphor, the magical power known as “magla” is born from the people’s fears and apprehensions. Overcoming these fears and transforming them into strength rather than running away forms the core of the game’s Archetype awakenings. This concept resonates deeply with each of Metaphor’s main characters, who grapple with their role in the harsh world of Euchronia.

The Collective Efforts of Metaphor’s Tribes Working Together

Indeed, these transformations aren’t sudden, which adds to their intrigue. Characters such as Heismay and Eupha require a catalyst to take charge of their lives, and this is intensified by the actions of the protagonist and the party. From Heismay secluding himself to mourn his child, to Eupha thinking she must serve as Virga Island’s priestess is her only purpose, they gradually understand that a life of stagnation or self-sacrifice won’t bring change due to the guidance and support they receive from others. This cooperative spirit and the importance of leaning on others, even across tribal boundaries, is a recurring motif in the narrative of Metaphor, emphasized through its teamwork mechanics, character synergies, and the power of its diverse cast.

A Quieter Awakening

In many instances within the Persona series, initial awakenings are sparked by impending battle danger. Metaphor, much like others in this regard, follows suit; however, its last party member presents a unique twist on this formula. Basilio, who skillfully avoids several challenges common to late-game additions, is initially presented alongside his brother Fidelio as a staunch supporter of Louis and a skeptic of the team. Metaphor’s narrative carefully interweaves the brothers into Virga Island’s storyline, ensuring Fidelio’s death at Louis’ hands has maximum impact. Initially enraged by the event, Basilio’s awakening occurs during a somber moment of mourning, where a vision of his deceased brother stirs in him a determination to safeguard the vulnerable. This is an interesting contrast given Basilio’s character archetype – the Berserker – yet it also emphasizes the importance of perseverance amidst adverse circumstances.

In the captivating world of “Metaphor”, the archetypes are masterfully woven into the narrative, with Eupha’s Summoner and Junah’s Masked Dancer fitting their backstories perfectly. The way these archetype awakenings intertwine with the storyline, culminating in the unveiling of the Prince’s Archetype, demonstrates a thoughtful design that makes the game’s awakening moments even more impactful. While “Metaphor” draws inspiration from the way “Persona” handles archetypes, it manages to stand independently, much like the rest of “Metaphor’s” tale and gameplay mechanics. This shows that “Metaphor” is capable of building on what makes “SMT” and “Persona” exceptional while maintaining its unique identity.
