How Mortal Kombat 1 Changes Geras

As a seasoned Mortal Kombat fan with decades under my belt (and a few scars to show for it), I must say that Geras’ evolution from a formidable foe in Mortal Kombat 11 to a key protagonist in Mortal Kombat 1 is nothing short of spectacular. The way Netherrealm Studios has managed to maintain his essence while reinventing him is truly commendable.

Spoilers for Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1 ahead.

Highlights

  • Geras in MK11 had a full backstory reset in MK1, tied to Kronika and Liu Kang, making him a central character in the new storyline.
  • However, Geras retains memories from MK11 and now works with MK’s protagonists as the Guardian of the Hourglass.
  • Geras’ visual changes reflect his evolved character in MK1, but he maintains his time-manipulating combat style with added abilities.

As a hardcore gamer diving into Mortal Kombat 1, I’m blown away by the stacked roster of both fresh and familiar faces, each boasting an arsenal of lethal martial arts moves that keep me hooked for countless hours of grisly fun. However, unlike previous games in the series, Netherrealm Studios decided to shake things up by rebooting the Mortal Kombat universe, effectively pressing the reset button and giving every character, including those fresh from Mortal Kombat 11 like the sand-manipulating Geras, a new origin story. This time around, Geras isn’t just another character receiving a makeover; he’s part of a completely revamped universe with its own unique set of rules and timeline.

In the storyline between Mortal Kombat 1 and Mortal Kombat 11, there was plenty of time travel action due to the plot choice made by Netherrealm Studios, who introduced the villain Kronika, a powerful Titan in the Mortal Kombat universe. She used to be the Keeper of Time and the Architect of the Universe’s destiny. Geras, one of Kronika’s former servants, had some of her abilities and was able to see time from its very origin. This unique experience gave him wisdom beyond what a mortal could typically possess, which allowed his storyline to avoid the destruction and rebuilding that everyone else experienced.

From Kronika’s Keeper to Mortal Kombat’s Titan of Time

A quick look at the new and improved Geras will show that he:

  • has retained his memories of the previous events in Mortal Kombat 11,
  • is now working with Liu Kang and the protagonists, and
  • has retained all of his abilities without any alterations (canonically) as opposed to others in the cast.

In the realm of Mortal Kombat, I, Geras, am a crafted being bound by the will of Kronika, an immortal entity whose very essence defies the limits of time as we know it. Wounded? Scarred? Fatal injuries? These terms have little meaning for me, as I’m more than just a fixed point in time. However, my existence was never truly mine, but a plaything to Kronika’s whims, devoid of free will.

In this role, Geras is responsible for overseeing schedules and maintaining equilibrium. With newfound autonomy, Geras gladly employs his skills in the part of a supportive character instead of the recurring antagonist he was in Mortal Kombat 11’s narrative. Interestingly, Liu Kang’s departure as the Time Titan in Mortal Kombat 1 opened up opportunities for Geras to emerge as one of the strongest characters in the Mortal Kombat universe. To put it simply, Geras has seized the chance offered by the cast’s transformations and flourished as a time-manipulating character.

Geras’ Visual and Gameplay Changes

Additionally, Geras’ design has been revamped to mirror his character development. Originally, he had a more robust physique and wore white armor adorned with golden details, fitting for Kronika’s servant, with a glowing blue energy beneath his skin reminiscent of her own radiance. In the latest edition of Mortal Kombat, Geras appears in a scholarly outfit, resembling a monk, even incorporating Liu Kang’s signature color scheme. His figure is leaner now, retaining an imposing presence but with less intimidating overtones. A dragon tattoo winds across his upper left torso and arm.

He is also, of course, still a very capable fighter. A vicious grappler with flashy, time-manipulating abilities that even goes so far as to undo damage inflicted upon him, the only revisions from MK11 in his Mortal Kombat 1 combat style are the noted improvements to mobility, visual flair, and combat capability, as with most of the updated roster. The sandman’s martial acumen in tandem with his near-boundless wisdom makes him far more dangerous than he ever was in Mortal Kombat 11; however, the nature of his character, as well as the direction of Mortal Kombat 1‘s story inspires hope that he won’t again become the force of calamity he threatened to be at his origin.
