The following contains mild spoilers for Death Stranding.
I was so excited to hear about the new animated project from Kojima Productions at their 10th anniversary event! It’s called *Death Stranding: Mosquito* for now, and it’s a really intriguing step for the *Death Stranding* universe. Hideo Kojima is producing, which is awesome, and Hiroshi Miyamoto from ABC Animation is directing. The script is being written by Aaron Guzikowski, who’s done *Raised by Wolves* and *Prisoners* – seriously great stuff! They’re calling it *Mosquito* for now, but knowing Kojima and how much meaning he puts into names, I have a feeling that title is a big clue about the main character and the story. It’s definitely got me thinking!

Okay, so they’re still not 100% confirming the main character’s name is actually ‘Mosquito,’ even if the game *is* called that. But ‘Mosquito’ definitely refers to this cool mask the character wears and what it *does*. During the reveal, Miyamoto and Kojima were super careful not to spoil anything, but they let slip that the character can ‘suck something’ – and it’s not blood! There are already hints in the short teaser trailer about what that ‘something’ could be, and what role this ‘Mosquito’ character will play in the bigger story of *Death Stranding*.
The Elephant in the Room is Mosquito’s Tar Mask

Similar to Sam Porter Bridges, the main character in *Death Stranding* is someone who returns from the afterlife. This is shown at the start of the teaser, where they enter the Seam – the ocean of time Sam floats in when he dies in the game. They choose to come back to life as their spirit re-enters their body.
The protagonist’s return to life is unusual. Their life force, or ‘ka,’ appears to follow a golden thread back to their body, though it’s hard to see clearly. Unlike Sam, who enters through the mouth and encounters a BB, the protagonist seems to re-enter through a tentacle-like appendage on their face. What happens next remains a mystery, as the scene ends with a title card.
The device clearly isn’t necessary for the character to breathe – it’s removed during a fight and they don’t struggle. If it’s drawing something other than blood, it’s likely taking chiralium, a resource from the game *Death Stranding*. Otherwise, it’s hard to say what it’s taking from the character’s ‘ha’ in the Seam. It could be absorbing their ha into their ka during repatriation, almost the opposite of how repatriation usually works, to power their DOOMs, or maybe to treat chiral contamination or delivery dependence syndrome (DSS).
Death Stranding Mosquito’s Protagonist is Nothing Like the MULEs They May Be Affiliated With
The main character in *Death Stranding: Mosquito* is clearly a MULE, as shown by their suit and the design of their odradek. This offers a unique way to explore the world of *Death Stranding*, particularly if the movie delves into the lives of MULEs. It’s especially interesting if this particular MULE – resembling Mosquito – is a Homo gestalt affected by long-term exposure to chiral radiation.
Who is Death Stranding Mosquito’s Suspiciously Sam-Looking Bridges Porter?

The recent teaser for *Death Stranding 2: On the Beach* shows a long scene of the main character fighting another Bridges porter. This porter strongly resembles Sam Porter Bridges, sporting a blue Special Delivery Team suit and the same hairstyle and facial hair as Norman Reedus, who plays Sam. While it’s not confirmed to be Sam, the similarity is likely intentional.
It’s not unusual to see MULEs and porters fighting, as they’re natural rivals. What’s odd in this case is that the porter isn’t carrying anything. Of course, a large, neatly arranged pile of supplies might just be hidden from view during the fight.

The scene starts around 0:50 in the teaser, showing the main character defending their dog, BT, from a worker who roughly pushes the dog away. The worker then tries to approach BT again, but the main character hits them, sending them flying backwards across the uneven terrain. It appears the main character has BT as a pet, and thankfully, BT looks like a normal dog, not one of the terrifying creatures Sam usually fights in *Death Stranding*.
When the main character kneels to help the BT creature, it shows they care about its safety and want to protect it. This moment feels like something you’d see in a typical anime, but it’s very different from what most players anticipate during a fight with a MULE. In fact, the hand-to-hand combat in both *Death Stranding* and *Death Stranding 2: On the Beach* is noticeably slower and more deliberate than in many other games.
Once players learn the Pizza-Do karate moves in *Death Stranding 2*, characters like Sam – and even regular porters – will be able to fight with incredible skill and power. The fighting style, even if it’s as over-the-top as something from an anime, is undeniably impressive.

These games prioritize sneaking and using Sam’s unique parry and bind techniques over direct combat. While players *can* fight with punches and kicks, or use guns in both deadly and non-lethal ways, the focus isn’t really on action. Instead, the gameplay centers more around exploring environments, finding your way around, and managing your items.
The strange fighting shown with the ‘Death Stranding Mosquito’ could just be a way to demonstrate how skilled the characters are in hand-to-hand combat, even though the games themselves are generally slower-paced and more focused on exploration. If the Mosquito is actually fighting Sam, they could potentially keep fighting to the death and respawning, so it will be interesting to see how the conflict plays out.
