As a passionate gamer, I can’t contain my excitement! On October 16, this year, I’ll be diving back into the France-inspired Kalos region with Game Freak’s latest offering, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, for Nintendo Switch. This sequel to Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Pokemon X, and Pokemon Y picks up where the original games left off, focusing on the urban regeneration of Lumiose City. In this city, I’ll have the chance to catch Pokemon right within its bustling streets, engage in thrilling Z-A Royale battles, and interact with new and familiar faces. So far, only AZ has been confirmed to return from the X and Y cast, but there’s a strong possibility that Calem and Serena could make a comeback in intriguing ways. Can’t wait to find out more!
Pokemon X and Y’s Calem and Serena Explained
In the games, Pokemon X and Y, players are given the option to pick either a male or female character. If you opt for the male character, Serena will be present throughout the game as your friend and rival. On the other hand, if you choose the female character, Calem will appear as a close friend and competitor. Both characters follow almost identical storylines within the game as the player’s rivals, with Calem and Serena being the children of well-known Rhyhorn riders and selected by Professor Sycamore to aid in Mega Evolution research. Additionally, Calem and Serena will assist you in defeating Team Flare and initially compete for control of a Mega Ring to correctly initiate Mega Evolution.
In simpler terms, both characters, Calem and Serena, could have ended up as the Champion of Kalos’ Pokémon League and the Grand Duke or Duchess of the Battle Chateau. However, it appears that Calem is confirmed as the main protagonist trainer in the story of Pokémon X and Y based on later portrayals. This is because Calem is shown to have become Champion in a short movie called “The Redemption” and also awakened and helped Xerneas defeat Lysandre in another short movie called “The Visionary”. Serena doesn’t appear in “The Redemption”, but she is depicted alongside Calem and Shauna fleeing Geosenge Town in the short movie “The Visionary”.
In the animated series “Pokémon the Series: XY”, Serena is a significant character, serving both as Ash Ketchum’s travel companion and eventual romantic interest. However, the character Calem does not make an appearance in this particular series.
Calem and Serena’s Potential Roles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
In contrast to some other characters from the Pokemon X and Y games like Dexio and Sina, who have appeared in later mainline Pokemon titles such as Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Calem and Serena have not been featured in these games. However, it’s worth noting that previous protagonists, such as Red, have made appearances in subsequent mainline Pokemon games, including Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black 2, White 2, Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. It’s possible that Calem and Serena might make an appearance in the upcoming Z-A games, perhaps in minor roles or as cameos, although their significance within the story may be limited.
In the narrative of Z-A, we might encounter Calem, portrayed as Kalos’ most recent Champion. He may pop up intermittently within the storyline, offering support to the player much like how Steven Stone and Cynthia did in previous games. As the story unfolds, it could be revealed that Calem is not only a helpful ally but also the final boss of the Z-A Royale once players reach Rank A. This could add an extra layer of difficulty to the Royale, echoing the challenge posed by the Pokemon League, as Kalos’ League is somewhat distant from Lumiose City. On the other hand, Calem might be introduced as a new Pokemon Professor in Kalos, taking over after presumably losing the Champion title to another trainer. It remains uncertain if Professor Sycamore will appear in Z-A, but should he not, Calem could make for an intriguing alternative.
Serena’s Possible Return in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
In the same vein as Calem, Serena might make occasional appearances in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, assisting the player by guiding them through the city, aiding in battles, or even teaching them about Mega Evolution since she possesses a Mega Ring following Calem’s Champion status. Inspired by the Pokemon anime, Game Freak could use Serena to highlight Lumiose City’s shops and distinctive fashion trends. A stretch, but it’s possible that Game Freak might have Serena introduce Pokemon Contests in Lumiose, similar to those seen in Hoenn and Sinnoh, to add more diversity to the gameplay experience in Z-A.
