In the story “Sakamoto Days”, it came as a shock when Sakamoto chose to depart from his life as an accomplished hitman. His colleagues and those who knew him well were taken aback, given his reputation as one of the greatest assassins ever known. However, what took everyone by surprise was that he had discovered genuine love, which prompted his decision to leave this profession behind.
In a turn of events that surprised Sakamoto, he encountered Aoi and instantly fell head over heels for her. However, due to the inherent challenges in his profession, their relationship soon faced obstacles, as Aoi disagreed with Sakamoto’s work ethics. Yet, when Sakamoto altered his lifestyle in “Sakamoto Days”, their bond flourished.
How Did Sakamoto and Aoi Meet?
Aoi Worked at a Convenience Store
Despite spending most of his life as a hitman since he was 14 years old, Sakamoto harbored strong moral principles hidden deep within. These principles were brought to light by Aoi. Their chance encounter occurred at a convenience store where Aoi worked, and upon their first meeting, Sakamoto found himself instantly smitten with her. They began dating shortly after this encounter, yet Sakamoto still maintained his role in The Order, which meant he continued his assassination tasks. However, since Aoi was morally opposed to his line of work, even if the targets weren’t necessarily innocent, she decided that their relationship could only continue if he left his job as a hitman.
In the second episode of season 1, Aoi jumps from a building to make a strong statement to Sakamoto. Without hesitation, he leaps after her and catches her mid-fall, thus saving her life. Upon rising from the ground, she expresses that his fear of losing her was so intense that he would go to any lengths to keep her safe. This suggests that he had been taking lives of people who were deeply loved by their families and friends. Following this eye-opening event, Sakamoto decided to instantly abandon his career as an assassin, and eventually, they fell in love, got married, and welcomed a daughter named Hana into their family.
If I can’t convince you to change, then I… then I can’t be with you. — Aoi
After Sakamoto departed from The Order, he was jobless and had solely worked as an assassin in his past. To avoid detection, he needed to remain hidden, making it challenging for him to secure a regular job. Aoi proposed starting a convenience store together as a means of earning a living. This store, known as Sakamoto’s Store, is situated on the outskirts of Tokyo in a quaint neighborhood where Sakamoto resides with Aoi and Hana. Their home is located on the upper floor above the store.
Where Are Sakamoto and Aoi Now?
How Are They Holding Up After Sakamoto’s Retirement?
Following the birth of their daughter Hana, Sakamoto undergoes a considerable transformation, both in his physical appearance and moral character. He now finds himself opposed to the work he once did, and when it comes to safeguarding his family, he opts for non-violent approaches. Earlier in his life, Sakamoto was associated with Shin, a young individual who had been drawn into the assassin world and admired Sakamoto as a role model. Upon Shin’s return to try and take down Sakamoto, as per The Order’s instructions, he soon capitulates and instead joins forces with Sakamoto at the store, eventually becoming an integral part of their family.
Dear One, I hope you haven’t resorted to returning to harmful actions, correct? Darling, you are aware that such behavior breaches our shared principles, and if it continues, our bond may be severed by divorce.
As I stand by, Lu Shaotang eventually joins our gathering too, making himself a part of our circle. Throughout this period, Aoi consistently nudges Sakamoto about the no-killing rule, hinting that defying it might lead to marital consequences. It’s clear that Aoi is the one who makes Sakamoto nervous and apprehensive, for he values her deeply and doesn’t want to lose her. Initially unaware of his collaborations with Shaotang and Shin, had she known, she would probably have been understanding given his peaceful approach. Sadly, he must re-enter a world fraught with danger due to the significant bounty placed on his head following his departure from The Order.
Despite an unexpected event disrupting their tranquil existence, Sakamoto remains just as formidable as before, safeguarding his family to maintain their security. The bond between Sakamoto and Aoi remains unbroken, and the arrival of Shin and Shaotang has only fortified their family unit. They adhere to their rule of abstaining from taking lives, instead fostering a warm friendship with their daughter, Hana. As their family grows stronger than ever, Aoi acknowledges Sakamoto’s protective role in preserving their harmonious lifestyle.
Sakamoto Days is available to stream on Netflix.
