As a huge fan of Bryan Lee O’Malley, I can tell you that Scott Pilgrim is basically a love letter to video games – and it’s probably the most wonderfully weird one you’ll ever come across!

That’s why fans were so excited in 2010 when a beat ’em up game was released alongside Edgar Wright’s film. Back then, it was common for movies and games to be launched together for promotion. Turning a comic book filled with video game references into a playable game was a brilliant idea, and it’s no surprise it was so popular.

The game’s title perfectly evoked the spirit of classic beat ‘em-up games, a genre that was once incredibly popular in arcades but had since become less common. What made it even better was that veteran designer O’Malley oversaw the entire project, contributing to the gameplay and level design.

From the beginning, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game was a fantastic, retro-style game where players battled Ramona Flowers’ seven evil exes. It was incredibly fun, thanks to its tough challenges, funny boss fights, and a catchy chiptune soundtrack that many still remember fondly. The game was even better with four-player local co-op, which added to the chaotic energy.

This game is instantly captivating – I wanted to tell everyone about it after just the first level! And at only $14.99, it was an amazing deal for fans of Scott Pilgrim and anyone looking for a nostalgic experience. Unfortunately, around four years after it came out, the game faced some serious issues that almost caused it to disappear completely.

A Sudden De-leveling

The strong performance of the 2021 revival showed that the Scott Pilgrim brand still resonated with audiences, which directly led to the 2023 Netflix anime, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Like the original game, the anime didn’t simply repeat the story. It surprised viewers with a fresh timeline, reminding everyone why they loved the quirky and relatable characters.

The excitement didn’t end with the anime’s popularity! Soon after, a sequel to the original Scott Pilgrim game was announced: Scott Pilgrim EX. This new beat ‘em up game will feature a completely original story written by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the creator of the series.

Not only does the re-release of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game highlight the importance of owning physical media – reminding us we’re essentially just renting our cherished memories without it – but it also surprisingly sparked renewed creativity from creator Bryan Lee O’Malley and caught the attention of big-name studios and producers.

The original Scott Pilgrim game was fun for those who remember it, but Scott Pilgrim EX feels like a real improvement, building on the classic gameplay with the same exciting, fast-paced action. Considering how close we came to never seeing another Scott Pilgrim game after 2014, this new title is a fantastic development.

What started as a struggling game has become a huge multimedia success, and thankfully, it shows no signs of slowing down! Now, whenever we think about the game, it feels like discovering something new and exciting, just like Scott felt when he first encountered Ramona.
