As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt and countless hours spent in the haunting world of Silent Hill 2, I must admit that the remake has left me feeling a tad disheartened. While I understand the need for innovation and fresh perspectives, there’s something profoundly disappointing about not being able to wield the iconic Great Knife again.
The remake of Silent Hill 2 creatively balances being true to the original game. The layouts and labyrinth structures are so different, they might as well belong to a new game entirely. Yet, despite these changes, the storyline remains largely consistent, fitting within the remake’s flexible tempo. Key scenes altered by Bloober Team in Silent Hill 2 are still reverently reflected through echo memories, giving the impression that there’s barely anything the remake could omit given its extensive playtime compared to the original.
Although the new endings and abundant content make the Silent Hill 2 remake an appealing choice for completionists, some players might find a letdown in its melee weapon selection. Unlike the original game, James Sunderland no longer holds onto the wooden plank after obtaining a metal pipe, and fans of the powerful and satisfying Great Knife from the original game may be disappointed to learn that it is not included as a melee weapon in the remake.
The Silent Hill 2 Remake’s Great Knife is But a Nostalgic Easter Egg
In the classic game Silent Hill 2, players might stumble upon Pyramid Head’s chamber and discover his iconic Great Knife resting on a table inside. This weapon, which James can carry, is intentionally clumsy and challenging to master effectively. James’ movements become laborious when he wields the Great Knife, but its flaws of awkwardness, weightiness, and creakiness can be overlooked if players manage to land painfully slow strikes on foes due to its immense stopping power.
In the midst of purposefully slow Great Knife assaults, interruptions can occur quite frequently, but the potential hazard usually outweighs the advantage it provides.
Regardless, it’s a tremendously fun melee weapon alternative and is perfect for anyone seeking a grueling challenge. Sadly, the remake evidently decided not to pull the trigger on supplying James with a Great Knife melee weapon of its own. Players do wield the Great Knife, but only for a brief sequence where James drags the enormous metal blade across the ground as he passes through a writhing mass of flailing, spectral appendages.
In the remade version of the game, Pyramid Head doesn’t have The Great Knife on his table, instead, he uses it during the chase scenes in the labyrinth. However, when players think they can’t find The Great Knife in this updated version, it becomes confusing when they later come across it where the rotating cube once stood. They can interact with it, pull it out from debris, but soon realize that it can’t be used as a weapon and only restricts James’ movement. So, even though players might have accepted the absence of The Great Knife in the remake initially, this unexpected appearance and non-functionality is a bit misleading.
Silent Hill 2’s Remake Doesn’t Plead Its Case Well Against Having a Great Knife Weapon
In the remake, since twice as much content was included to extend its length, it’s quite unexpected that only the chainsaw from the original game successfully carried over as a solitary extra tool for combat. It might sadden players to learn that they can’t acquire the Great Knife as a weapon in this version.
Since Bloober took the trouble to create animations showing James carrying the wooden plank clumsily, we might assume that the plank could have been a weapon on its own, even if the animation looks awkward and laborious. The remake of Silent Hill 2 replaces the wooden plank with a metal pipe without giving players the option to select either from their inventory, which might lead one to argue that Bloober intended for there to be only one melee weapon available in the game.
In contrast, the argument weakens when you discover that players can interchangeably use both a pipe and chainsaw, with the latter being accessible during a New Game Plus. Interestingly, it seems only these two specific melee weapons can be swapped, hinting at the possibility that other potential weapons like the Great Knife were not utilized in Bloober’s production process.
