How Star Wars Games Could End 2024 with a Bang

As a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast with decades of fandom under my belt, I must say that 2024 has been a rollercoaster ride for us fans, filled with both thrilling highs and puzzling lows when it comes to our beloved video games. From the divisive open-world adventure of Outlaws to the intense action of Jedi: Survivor, this year has offered a diverse range of experiences that have kept us on the edge of our seats.

2024 has been a bustling year for Star Wars video games, with quite a few releases to note. Ubisoft kicked things off in August with their open-world action-adventure game, Star Wars Outlaws, which received mixed reviews on PC and current-generation consoles. In June, Zynga debuted the initial version of the multiplayer shooter, Star Wars Hunters, on Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. Respawn Entertainment made headlines this year as well, with their Soulslike-inspired action game, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, launching for PS4 and Xbox One in mid-September, about a year after its premiere on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. Lastly, Aspyr Media, an Embracer Group subsidiary, brought some classic Star Wars games to modern platforms, including Star Wars: Bounty Hunter and the first two installments of Star Wars: Battlefront.

Regarding recent updates about new Star Wars games, there hasn’t been much activity this year. A few Star Wars titles are in production, but they haven’t seen many updates in 2024 as of yet. The most intriguing among these games appear to be Star Wars: Eclipse and the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. These games were announced over three years ago, but we still don’t know when they might be launched or even if they will ever come out. If announcements about Star Wars: Eclipse or the KOTOR remake are made at The Game Awards in December, it would not only clarify the current state of these projects, but also make a fitting end to 2024 for Star Wars enthusiasts.

A Star Wars Eclipse or KOTOR Remake Announcement at the TGAs Would Be a Perfect Way to End 2024

Star Wars Eclipse is the Next Big Game from Quantic Dream, and It’s Still a Ways Off

Among the two Star Wars games mentioned earlier, Star Wars: Eclipse appears to be the most mysterious one. This game was introduced during The Game Awards 2021, but its trailer only consisted of a long CGI scene without any actual gameplay footage. Despite being developed by Quantic Dream, a French studio known for creating interactive adventure games such as Detroit: Become Human and Heavy Rain, this upcoming title seems to place more emphasis on combat than their previous productions. However, it will also incorporate a “branching” narrative style similar to Telltale Games, featuring choices and their respective outcomes.

Information about the development of “Star Wars: Eclipse” has been scarce. In fact, Quantum Dream last provided an update to fans in September 2023, stating that while the game does exist, it’s not quite ready yet. Since then, over a year has gone by, and given the departure of the game’s lead writer from Quantic Dream in August 2024, it seems “Star Wars: Eclipse” may still be a ways off. At this point, any fresh trailers or tidbits about the game would be eagerly received by fans who have been waiting patiently for more news.

Development on the KOTOR Remake Has Been Troubled, But It’s Still in the Works

The remake for the “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” was unveiled during a PlayStation Showcase in 2021, similar to “SW: Eclipse,” but despite this announcement, the game is yet to appear. It’s not a secret that the development of this remake has faced challenges so far. Initially, Aspyr Media was set to develop it as an exclusive title for PlayStation 5, but following reports of Sony withdrawing funding, Saber Interactive, known for creating “Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2,” is now leading the project. As of April 2024, the CEO of Embracer Group, the company responsible for publishing the game, confirmed that work on the KOTOR remake is ongoing.

The classic “Knights of the Old Republic” is often hailed as one of the greatest role-playing games ever made, and recreating such a game while preserving its unique qualities will be quite a challenge. Saber Interactive, known for their rich history, hasn’t delved much into large-scale remakes like this, so it’ll be intriguing to observe how they approach “KOTOR”. If the release isn’t too distant, fans might catch a sneak peek of this “Star Wars” game by year’s end. While this is merely optimistic conjecture, it would indeed be an exciting conclusion to a strong 2024 for Star Wars gaming.
