As a long-time Sims fanatic who has witnessed the evolution of this game since its inception, I must say that The Sims 4: Lovestruck has truly outdone itself in terms of inclusivity and diversity. It’s like Maxis and EA have been peeking into my personal life!

Ten years ago, The Sims 4 was initially released, and throughout this period, its core game has been continually updated to foster a more diverse and inclusive gaming environment. While The Sims 4 already provided players with an expanded range of options to customize their Sims’ sexual orientations, the expansion pack, The Sims 4: Lovestruck, took this a step further by enhancing the game’s inclusivity in terms of how Sims perceive and express romantic and sexual attraction, as well as the types of relationships they prefer, making it more inclusive than ever before.

In various ways, individuals express romantic feelings, sexual desires, and manage relationships, but this diversity hasn’t always been mirrored in the world of The Sims. The expansion pack The Sims 4: Lovestruck addresses this by introducing multiple new relationship types and ways for Sims to experience love. Additional inclusive updates include gender-neutral terms for partners and novel relationship statuses. Players now have the autonomy to customize these aspects individually. With these innovative tools, Sims can now engage in functional asexual romantic relationships, polyamory, and even go on dates with friends for queerplatonic relationships.

Why Bring Inclusivity to The Sims 4’s Relationships

Inclusivity is important for any game, but it’s especially important for life simulators like The Sims 4 as it’s designed to reflect life. Even if there are fantastic elements to the content, such as occult gameplay, the core of The Sims 4 is to reflect real people. To that end, including options such as medical aids, cuisine from different cultures, and accurate representations of race and sexual orientations are important in The Sims 4. The Sims 4‘s depiction of relationships has been fine to date, but The Sims 4: Lovestruck adds a lot of depth that didn’t exist before.

Polyamory is Now a Thing in The Sims 4

A significant update has been made to allow Sims to engage in polyamorous relationships, facilitated by a new jealousy preferences feature. This option can be selected when customizing your Sim in Create-a-Sim. This feature is optional but has a significant impact on inclusivity. Another notable improvement is the ability to tailor how Sims experience romantic attraction towards other Sims, rather than limiting it to specific individuals they’re attracted to. Now, Sims can develop romantic feelings as well as express being reserved and specifying that they don’t experience sexual attraction, thereby creating authentic asexual Sims, not just ones based on headcanon.

Using Tools to Make Relationships Richer in The Sims 4

The Versatility of Romantic Boundaries in The Sims 4: Lovestruck

In “The Sims 4: Lovestruck,” players will encounter polyamorous relationships through a new feature called Romantic Boundaries. This tool broadens the concept of infidelity by introducing emotional cheating as a possibility. The Romantic Boundaries category, where jealousy can be adjusted, encompasses various instances such as a romantic partner receiving compliments, flirting, or any other form of non-physical affection that may spark feelings of jealousy. There are three levels of Romantic Boundary categories, with each level increasing the level of physical contact from romantic physical interaction that excludes “WooHoo,” to the final category which includes “WooHoo.” The fourth category offers in-game flexibility to adjust these boundaries.

As a gamer, I appreciate the fact that not every player’s experience needs to be the same in The Sims 4: Lovestruck. It’s crucial for this expansion pack to offer diverse options so that those who wish to see themselves reflected in the game can create characters that mirror their unique experiences. For me, these new features open up a world where I can customize how my Sims express love, making the game more inclusive and enhancing my gaming experience.
