How to Add a Fourth Party Member in Dragon Quest 2 Remake

Players of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake may have noticed that promotional images for Dragon Quest 2 Remake showed a group of four characters, while the original game only had three. Many are wondering when they’ll unlock the fourth party member after starting the remake with a smaller team. This guide will explain how to recruit Princess Matilda of Cannock and complete your four-person party in Dragon Quest 2 Remake.

How to Add the Fourth Party Member in Dragon Quest 2 Remake

Complete the First Major Milestone in DQ2 – Obtaining A Ship:

If you’re curious whether Dragon Quest 2 Remake adds a new character to your team, the answer is definitely yes! Many fans guessed correctly that it would be Matilda, the Princess of Cannock, as she was a key figure in the original game. But before she can officially join your party (she appears briefly earlier on), you’ll need to complete a major early goal: getting a ship from the people of Rippleport.

After you’ve recruited Caradoc and Peronel to join your group, your next big challenge will be finding a ship. This task becomes available once you have a party of three.

Destination, Beran:

After you get a ship, you’ll be able to choose where to go next. If you’ve enabled markers, you’ll see four suggested destinations: Tantegel, Beran, Burrowell, and Zahan.

You can find and recruit Matilada, Princess of Cannock, in the town of Beran. You’re free to go there whenever you like, but be warned – it’s a tough challenge, harder than anything you’ve encountered so far. If you’re playing on Dragon or Draconian difficulty, it’s a good idea to reach levels 15–20 first, or complete the Tantegel or Zahan quests to prepare.

How to Recruit Matilda:

When you arrive in Beran, your group will likely want to explore the city separately, and accepting this is part of the quest. Once everyone has split up, head to the southern docks to meet the Prince of Cannock and continue your journey.

Okay, so after you chat with Caradoc, get ready! You’ll be thrown into a battle with this huge Brute Bat Boss right outside the church. It’s a tough fight, but once you win, you’ll find out Caradoc’s been poisoned!

The Prince will be brought to the Beran Inn and helped to bed by the local priest. After that, you should go to Cannock to speak with the Prince’s parents, but sadly, they won’t be able to offer any assistance. Once you’ve spoken with them, please return to Beran.

When you return to Beran, you’ll find Princess Matilda desperately asking people about a possible cure. Talk to her, then go back to Caradoc and the Priest.

Once you talk to the priest, you’ll discover a place called Yggdrasil’s Arbour. Legend says a tree there has a leaf that can cure any sickness. If you’ve been there before, you know it’s easy to get lost in the fog, like a maze. Luckily, the priest will give you Forest’s Favor, an item that clears the fog and lets you navigate through the area.

Once you reach Yggdrasil’s Arbour, Matilda will rejoin your group, though you won’t be able to control her just yet. This area isn’t very challenging – just head towards Yggdrasil and approach the tree to collect Yggdrasil’s Leaf.

After you get the leaf, go back to Beran and talk to the priest. This will restore the Prince to health. Once that’s finished, both Caradoc, the Prince, and Matilda, the Princess, will come back to join your group.

Matilda is the character in Dragon Quest 2 Remake who most closely resembles a Thief class. She’s incredibly lucky, meaning she often lands critical hits. Plus, she learns powerful skills and spells, making her a very adaptable fighter. Having Matilda join your team significantly improves your ability to defeat difficult enemies, so it’s well worth recruiting her as soon as possible.
