How to Adopt Pets in Heartopia (Cats and Dogs)

Getting a pet in Heartopia is a really rewarding experience, but it’s not available immediately when you start the game. Heartopia wants you to get comfortable with the town and learn how things work before you get a companion. Once you’ve established yourself, you can adopt a dog or cat to share your home with. Here’s a guide on how to adopt a pet in Heartopia.

How to Unlock Pets in Heartopia

In Heartopia, you can get your first pet once you become a D.G. Member at Level 12. Reaching this level will start a quest that takes you to Mrs. Joan and the Adoption Center.

To start taking care of pets in Heartopia, you first need to unlock the five main hobbies: Cooking, Gardening, Insect Catching, Bird Watching, and Fishing. Once you’ve done that, go to the Adoption Center. Mrs. Joan will ask for a Hobby Expansion Ticket. Giving her one will unlock the ability to care for cats, and then shortly after, dogs. You’ll receive enough tickets to unlock both pet care options.

You don’t have to adopt both a cat and a dog immediately. You can just go home and come back later.

How to Get a Cat in Heartopia

If you’d like to adopt a cat, please talk to Mrs. Joan and let her know you’re interested in cats. She’ll show you the three cats currently available. Once you’ve chosen a cat, spend some time getting to know them – a little bubble will pop up above their head as you interact!

Tap on the bubble to view their ID card, which shows:

  • Breed
  • Gender
  • Personality traits (Energetic, Clingy, Sensitive, Sociable, Indifferent, etc.)

If you’d like to adopt a cat, click the “Adopt” button. If not, simply close the window and check out the next cat. Once adopted, your new feline friend will appear immediately on your home plot. You can always find them by checking the “Pet Tab” on your in-game smartwatch.

How to Get a Dog in Heartopia

The process for adopting a dog is similar to adopting a cat, but with one extra step. First, you need to speak with Mrs. Joan about cats, and then speak to her again to inquire about dogs.

Then, walk up to any of the three dogs to view their:

  • Breed
  • Gender
  • Personality traits

Once you’ve chosen the dog you want, select ‘Adopt’. Your new pup will be delivered right to your home, and you can follow their journey to you using the Pet Tab.

The more you practice caring for cats and dogs, the more Mrs. Joan will let you look after them.
