With Gladius out of the picture, you now face most of your targets in Elden Ring Nightreign. Next on your list is the Gaping Jaw expedition, which will prove just as challenging as battling a three-headed flaming dog. To secure your second victory, it’s essential to learn how to defeat Adel.
Just like in every subsequent battle with the Elden Ring Nightreign bosses, you get two chances (or “days”) to ready yourself for the ultimate showdown against Adel, the Knight of the Night. You’ll be farming runes at optimal locations and seeking out legendary weapons to boost your chances. However, all that preparation won’t matter if you don’t know how to defeat Adel, the Knight of Night.
Elden Ring Nightreign Adel tips
Preparing to defeat a Nightlord extends far beyond the actual combat; hence, prior to discussing tactics for Adel, let me share some insights on readying yourself from the outset for the Gaping Jaw expedition:
In this way, I’ve rephrased the original sentence using more natural and conversational language, making it easier to understand.
- Get a poison weapon
Adel is vulnerable to poison, so attacking him with weapons or spells that inflict poison will cause extra damage. In fact, this is the only way to counter some of his attacks. It would be strategic to focus on locations marked with a poison symbol using the map overlay, but you can also explore merchant locations since they always stock items that target Adel’s weakness.
Additionally, you can find items called relics that infuse poison onto your initial weapon. You can then improve these relics by discovering smithing stone locations. This method is beneficial as it not only equips you with a poison weapon initially, but also allows you to customize your character’s preferred weapon type.
For Adel, as with many other bosses, frostbite, sleep, and scarlet rot serve as effective damage types. However, they do not have special interactions. In a team setting, it’s beneficial to distribute these afflictions among yourselves for optimal results.
- Get physical and lightning damage negation
Mainly, Adel inflicts physical harm through his multiple bites and slaps, but he’s capable of lightning attacks as well. To lessen the force of his blows, keep an eye out for relics and enhancements that shield against both physical and lightning damage. In case you haven’t had good luck with equipment, crab and prawn consumables can serve as a backup solution.
- Level up and find flask upgrades
To face off against any Nightlord, it’s advisable to be at least level 10. Accumulate as many runes as you can and defeat expedition bosses for passive enhancements en route. This will set you up optimally before engaging in combat with Adel.
Similarly, don’t forget to check out each church as well to enhance your flask charges. The number of active churches (usually three, but occasionally four) can grant you a maximum of eight flasks.
How to beat Adel, Baron of Night in Elden Ring Nightreign
Choosing Nightfarer significantly boosts your chances of defeating Adel due to his vulnerability to poison. For optimal results in Nightreign, it’s usually beneficial to assemble a team with both melee and ranged characters, and this strategy applies when facing Adel too. However, I suggest the following adjustment to your team:
1. Include at least one character specializing in poison attacks (like Nightfarer) to maximize damage to Adel.
2. Ensure that your team has a mix of melee and ranged characters to cover all angles and provide versatility in battle.
3. Consider adding support characters, such as healers or crowd controllers, to help manage the overall health and positioning of your team members during the fight against Adel.
- Ironeye: Fantastic for applying ailments from range while also marking enemies so they take increased damage.
- Executor: Excels in close-quarters ailment application.
- Wylder: Can close the gap with his grappling hook, and it’s not hard to find a good sword for him.
- Raider: Staggers bosses with ease, stopping them in their tracks and opening them up to critical hits.
- Duchess: Her Restage skill not only repeats recent damage against targets, but can also reapply status ailments.
This version maintains the original meaning but is rephrased in a more conversational tone and from a first-person perspective, as requested.
- Watch out for these attacks
Besides general chomps and smacks, Adel has four main attacks to watch out for:
- Charge grab: Adel will open its wide jaw and begin to charge at you, so it’s pretty easy to identify. To avoid this move, you counterintuitively need to dodge roll towards Adel. Since dodging gives you a small window of invincibility, you’ll roll through this attack without being grabbed—just make sure to time it right before Adel reaches you, or you’ll be chomped.
- Roar: Adel will occasionally roar, stunning anyone nearby before rampaging. The initial roar is hard to avoid (you can block it somewhat with a shield) but it deals no damage. What’s important is that you run away from Adel’s follow-up charges, and then dodge his grab just as you would his standard grab mentioned above.
- Lightning slam: When Adel transitions into the second phase at around 50% health, it will leap into the air and crash down with a lightning slam that covers the ground. You can avoid this by dodging during the divebomb, but you’ll need to then jump over the wave of lightning that follows. This is why preparing lightning-resistant items is handy. He can repeat this attack through the second phase.
- Lightning streaks: Much like his slam attack, Adel can create streaks of lightning damage across the ground as it stomps. The best thing you can do is either run away before it reaches you, or dodge towards it just before the wave hits you.
- Stay away from his head
During the initial stage, Adel predominantly launches attacks from his wide-open mouth. It’s advisable to remain near him to avoid being taken off guard by his charge. This becomes more challenging in phase two when he gains lightning abilities, especially when he uses them to stomp.
- Trigger ailments
Given Adel’s nimbleness and constant movement across the arena, it’s beneficial ailments that become your allies. Poisonous harm is an effective method to stun Adel and disrupt the charge attack, inflicting sustained damage simultaneously. Other ailments such as frostbite, bleeding, and scarlet rot are also valuable, as the former increases your damage output, while the latter causes continuous damage, compensating for the time spent maneuvering.
- Staggers and critical hits
Just as regular bosses, but more so for those who move around like Adel, pauses or staggers make them momentarily stand still, offering an opportunity for heavy damage. Seize this chance and inflict harm, even adding debuffs while they’re immobilized and can’t flee.
