The boss battles at the beginning of God of War: Sons of Sparta are generally pretty simple – Kratos can usually win by using strength and dodging. But the fight against Alastor, which takes place in the Oenus Vineyard, is a lot different.
Shortly after arriving at the vineyard, players will discover a statue of Alastor. However, the real challenge begins after they destroy the four unsettling fountains, which awakens the conflict daemon. Be warned: defeating Alastor in God of War: Sons of Sparta is a difficult fight.
How to beat Alastor in God of War: Sons of Sparta
The Alastor boss fight happens in three stages. Throughout the fight, he’ll create red orbs – similar to the ones Kratos destroyed at the fountains. These orbs regularly shoot yellow, tracking projectiles at you, so it’s best to destroy them quickly.
At the start of the battle, Alastor will fly to the side and shoot a barrage of projectiles at Kratos and Atreus. While you can dodge or deflect these attacks, it’s usually easier to simply block them. After attacking from both sides of the screen, Alastor will land, giving you an opportunity to deal some good damage. This pattern continues until the next phase of the fight begins.
You can avoid damage from Alastor’s blood whip by standing right on top of his character sprite. Carefully position yourself there, and then you can attack freely.
Phase 2 starts when Alastor’s health reaches about 60%. He’ll fly to the center of the screen and shoot a lot of red projectiles. To avoid damage, quickly and repeatedly press the block button while standing directly under him – Kratos will parry most of them. After the projectiles stop, focus on destroying the red orbs.
Similar to the first phase, Alastor will move to the side and shoot quick projectiles at Kratos. This attack lasts longer now, sweeping across the entire screen twice, but you can still block or parry it without taking much damage. However, be careful of Alastor’s blood fists – he summons them right before the projectile attack, and they are much more dangerous.
After Alastor shoots his projectile, he’ll move to the side and summon flying, bloody fists. These fists travel across the screen horizontally or vertically and can’t be blocked or dodged with a parry. They deal significant damage, so stay alert during this attack!
To avoid getting hit by the blood fists, stay near the bottom of the screen. When fists fall from above, simply move left or right to dodge them. While you might think of jumping over the fists that sweep across the screen, the best tactic is to actually dodge roll through them.
It might seem strange, but the game actually gives you a lot of leeway with invincibility frames. If you begin rolling about a second after going through the blood fists, you’ll avoid damage.
Okay, so you’ll get openings to actually hurt Alastor – when you see his blue health bar drop, that’s your cue! Definitely use your special abilities and attacks then, because that’s when they’ll do the most damage. Seriously, the Evergreen Flame is a lifesaver here, so use it whenever you can. Just when you think it can’t get any tougher, things ramp up even more when he hits 25% health and the final phase starts. It’s a real challenge!
During Phase 3, you’ll face four red orbs instead of the usual two. It’s unlikely you can destroy them all at once, so try to eliminate two orbs each time the phase resets. Avoid getting hit by the blood fists – they’re a major threat! If you do get damaged, use your Olpe of Wellness to heal, but only when you have a safe moment between attacks.
During Phase 3, Alastor doesn’t learn any new attacks, but he attacks much more quickly. He also stays still for shorter periods, making it harder to find openings to strike. The most effective times to damage him are immediately before he starts creating blood fists, and right after he fires one of his projectiles. These opportunities are short, but should allow you to slowly reduce his health with each attack.
Alastor Boss Fight Rewards
Okay, so you keep fighting Alastor, and eventually he’ll get completely stunned when his health runs out. That’s when the game will tell you to press Triangle to destroy his laurel wreath. Once you do that, the fight’s over! You’ll get the Platinum Laurel, which you can trade with the Kerkopes, and you’ll also unlock the ‘Bathed in Blood’ Trophy. That trophy is one of 35 you need to get the full platinum for God of War: Sons of Sparta – a pretty big accomplishment!
