How to beat Commander Honglan in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

In Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Commander Honglan is one of the formidable leaders you’ll encounter early in the game. If you lack suitable weaponry or strategy, she has the potential to cause significant trouble for you.

Throughout Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, each boss presents its own level of difficulty. However, it’s evident that certain bosses prove to be more challenging than others. In the opening chapter, you can usually overcome most adversaries after a few tries as soon as you grasp their distinct attack patterns and learn when to respond effectively.

You may find yourself moving forward smoothly, but Commander Honglan could suddenly stop you dead in your tracks. This battle serves as an initial test of your skills, hinting at the tougher fights that lie ahead.

So, if you’re struggling to get past her, here’s how to beat Commander Honglan.

Commander Honglan overview in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

In the first chapter, Commander Honglan serves as the ultimate adversary, positioned within the palace courtyard. To proceed to Chapter 2, she must be vanquished first. However, feel free to venture back and gather Red Mercury for leveling up prior to your confrontation with her.

In her first stage, she combines strikes with a sword, along with punches and kicks. Later, she transitions into utilizing wind-based attacks during the second phase.

As a gaming enthusiast, I must admit that, although not quite on par with the difficulty level of the bosses in later chapters, she certainly represents a substantial leap forward from the foes encountered in Chapter 1. In essence, she serves as a test of my skills, confirming whether I’ve grasped the game mechanics to a sufficient degree to advance further.

Commander Honglan strengths & weaknesses

To be honest, Commander Honglan lacks any notable vulnerabilities, which is what makes her such a formidable foe.

In battle, if you’re skilled with a sword, you can use the technique of deflecting to dodge some of her attacks, provided you’ve perfected the timing. Moreover, she is vulnerable to long-range spells that pose minimal risk to you, but these opportunities are scarce and infrequent.

Her most notable asset lies in her incredible swiftness. Initially, her sequence of moves can seem unyielding, frequently pushing you off balance, making it challenging to determine the appropriate moment and location for retaliation.

Preparation: Best weapons & skills

For an effortless fight, it’s advisable to wield a Longsword along with a One-Handed Sword. While we opted for a Lashing Whip and the Astral Blade, feel free to choose your preferred weapons within these Weapon Types.

Longswords are versatile weapons that excel in various situations, and importantly for this battle, they possess the Sword Counter Discipline upon unlocking it from the Impetus Repository. This feature aids survival during longer combos since you can counterattack to dodge potential damage.

Additionally, you’ll require Windforce to launch swift, powerful strikes that momentarily incapacitate her, providing an opportunity for significant damage.

In the meantime, you can utilize One-Handed Swords primarily to boost the power of your spells, as these are extremely important.

While wielding One-Handed Swords, it’s advisable to focus on amplifying the strength of your spells, which play a vital role.

It’s equally important that you acquire both Biding Time and Sword Saint abilities before you begin playing. These skills enable you to amass Skybound Might either every few seconds while wielding a One-Handed Sword, or on each second strike of a light combo with a Longsword. Consequently, this gives you more frequent access to spells and Weapon Skills.

How to beat

Despite the initial impulse to keep a safe distance, it’s wiser to remain fairly near Commander Honglan during her continuous attacks, particularly in the initial stage. This proximity will help you dodge, block, and occasionally strike back more effectively.

Instead of just getting a single strike or two, the ideal situation for you is when she performs a swift sequence of punches and kicks, creating a continuous barrage.

Or, more informally:
Instead of just one or two hits, what you’re hoping for is her to go on an all-out punching and kicking spree.

As I steer clear of all those obstacles and skillfully dodge the climactic blow, placing myself strategically behind her, I can seize the moment to deploy my Longsword with a powerful strike, thanks to one Skybound Might. This heavy hit stuns her, giving me the perfect opportunity to execute an Obliterate Attack, significantly depleting her health.

In the second stage, Honglan’s abilities are similar to the first, but she now incorporates some wind-based attacks. These attacks allow her to send wave-like blasts your way from a distance. Luckily, these moves are fairly simple to avoid, and they’re perfect for gathering Skybound Might efficiently.

At this point, it’s advisable to persist with the actions you were previously taking, yet intermittently adjust to provoke gusts of wind. It’s during these instances that your spells become useful.

After skillfully avoiding their attacks, you can retaliate by unleashing the Echoes of Lu Bizang, hurling a flaming spear over the battlefield. Remember to wield your One-Handed Sword while casting this spell, as it will greatly boost its power.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve found myself engrossed in this game, where I persistently rinse and wash until I manage to decrease her health meter significantly enough to progress to Chapter 2. This process might require several attempts to perfect, particularly when it comes to the precise timing of my dodges, but with a touch of patience and the right strategy, I’m confident that I can conquer her challenges soon!
