In the sequel to Path of Exile, Count Geonor, also known as the Rotten Wolf, is the concluding battle of Act 1. This encounter serves as a challenge for players aiming to proceed into Act 2 and continue their journey through the campaign. The fight with this boss unfolds across three distinct stages, each introducing fresh attack patterns that players must adapt to and master.
As a gamer, I know that vanquishing Count Geonor isn’t just about raw power; it’s about mastering his attack patterns and knowing when to move, when to dodge, and when to hold my ground. Button-mashing won’t cut it with this foe, not even for the most powerful characters. The Mad Wolf is no pushover, and brute force isn’t going to carry me through this fight.
How to Beat Count Geonor in PoE 2
Geonor’s battle unfolds across three distinct stages. During the initial stage, he appears as a human, wielding a massive greatsword, unleashing ice attacks, and occasionally shifting into wolf form. In the second phase, he completes his transformation into a wolf, restoring all his health and acquiring new moves and powers that are much harder to evade. The final stage sees him become enraged, posing a far greater danger.
Phase 1: Human Form
In the initial stage of this battle, Geonor tends to signal his attacks well ahead of time, providing ample opportunity to respond and inflict damage during the gaps in his combo sequence.
In Human form, Geonor has the following attacks.

Keep a close eye for the critical maneuver during this stage – the Red Blood Rush. It’s quite challenging to dodge due to the fact that if you begin to dodge as soon as the blood circle materializes, you won’t manage to evade the assault. The only method to prevent damage is to move towards the edge of the circle before dodging. This requires precise timing. If not timed correctly, you might find yourself on the border of the blast zone and suffer the attack. Since there are no invincibility frames, dodging is effective only if you actually exit the area of effect damage.
For a simpler battle experience, players can utilize the Party function to call upon allies and transport them instantly to the boss encounter.
Phase 2: Wolf Form
Once Geonor drops to around 40% health, he completely morphs into a massive wolf and restores all his health.

During the Ice Spikes assault, it’s safest to stay well away from Geonor. Interestingly, if players position themselves where there’s no ice floor beneath them, they can completely avoid the attack. This creates an excellent chance for melee characters to attack the boss unhindered by evasion. Essentially, this is the optimal moment for high damage output.
As a fan, I’d advise against dodging the summoned wolves during Ice Nova. Thirty seconds might seem like a manageable duration, but consistently evading them, especially with Geonor chasing close behind, can be quite challenging. Interestingly, slaying the wolves offers an unexpected advantage: it restores both your health and mana flasks. Don’t hesitate to employ your most potent area-of-effect spells and abilities against the wolves. They have a knack for trapping you in a deadly situation if you allow them to surround and overpower you.
Rather than casting ranged spells while ascending in Requiem at high levels, it might be more advantageous to concentrate on evading the beams instead.
As a fellow enthusiast, if you’re finding yourself short on damage output, why not level up your primary weapon? You could do this by enhancing its rarity or equipping it with powerful modifiers for a significant boost in DPS.
Phase 3: Enraged Wolf Form
As Geonor nears his last breath in wolf form, his health drops to approximately 25%, triggering a state of rage. In this stage, he employs the same moves as before, but with an important extra: he now incorporates a new attack into his repertoire.
