How to Break Bars in God of War Sons of Sparta

Okay, so in God of War: Sons of Sparta, I’m constantly running into stuff blocking my way – like poisonous gas, floors that aren’t really there, or just plain old gates. Sometimes figuring out how to get past it is as simple as looking around, but other times I need to find a new weapon or learn a new ability to solve the puzzle. It keeps things interesting, you know?

After you get the Solar Sling in God of War: Sons of Sparta, you’ll notice yellow devices on walls and ceilings. Shooting these often opens gates or moves platforms nearby. Some levers are locked behind bars that seem impossible to break, but the Solar Sling can actually get through them. This guide will explain how to unlock the Ray of Light upgrade and use the Solar Sling to destroy those bars.

How to Upgrade the Solar Sling with Ray of Light in God of War: Sons of Sparta

Reaching The Sanctuary

To destroy barriers with the Solar Sling, you first need to get the Ray of Light upgrade. To do that, you’ll need to find an Undying Hyacinth at the Sacred Monument in The Sanctuary.

Kratos and Deimos are looking for their friend, Vasilis, and their search will take them to the Port of Messenia. From the port, players can either take a boat to the Isle of Aeaea or travel inland towards The Sanctuary. To reach The Sanctuary, climb the scaffolding in Port Town and follow the Eurotas River to the left. You’ll be on the right path if you see the Temple of Nike along the way.

When you enter The Sanctuary, go to the far-left side of the room. You’ll find a stone fountain depicting a woman pouring water from an urn, positioned in front of what looks like a blocked-off path. Walk up to the wall on the left and destroy it using your spear. This will open a secret passage leading to the Sacred Monument.

Touch the Sacred Monument to get the Undying Hyacinth. Then, return to the Temple of Apollo and place it on the central altar to improve your Solar Sling.

After upgrading, the Solar Sling lets you shoot a powerful Ray of Light that can break through metal bars. To fire the beam and destroy obstacles, equip the Solar Sling and hold down the L2 button while pressing Square.

Giving the Undying Hyacinth to the Temple of Apollo doesn’t just unlock Ray of Light – it also lets you upgrade your Solar Sling, giving you three brand new attacks.

  • Sun Stone (R2) — Launch a stone projectile embodying the heat of the sun.
  • Ray of Light (L2 + Square) — Launch a projectile at the speed of light to pierce objects and enemies.
  • Solar Storm (L2 + Triangle) — Unleash a barrage of solar projectiles to annihilate enemies.

Kratos’ enhanced Solar Sling lets him defeat enemies using sunlight and access previously unreachable areas. He can also overcome thorny obstacles with the help of the Evergreen Flame.
