In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, players will quickly encounter large, gray boulders that block their way on roads, in alleyways, and along hidden paths. These rocks can be broken to clear the way and reveal what lies beyond.
To continue the game’s story, players need to break apart certain rocks, but the method for doing so isn’t quite the same as in traditional *Pokemon* games, which can be confusing.
How to Break Boulders in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you can destroy certain boulders by using any Fighting or Rock-type move that deals damage. The first move most players will get that can do this is Rock Smash. To use Rock Smash, you’ll need to catch a Pokemon that learns it, either by leveling up or using a Technical Machine (TM).

If you need a Pokémon to use Rock Smash early in the game, Bunneby is a great choice. You can find it right at the beginning in Wild Area 1.
How to Get Rock Smash in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Okay, so as a new player, I found out you actually get the Rock Smash TM right during the tutorial, which is awesome! Then, after learning how to catch Pokémon in Wild Area 1, this trainer named Taunie asks you to catch five different kinds of Pokémon from that area for her quest, “A New Life in Lumiose City.” It’s pretty easy because there are only five Pokémon species available in Wild Area 1 when you start, and one of them is a cute little Bunnelby!

Once you’ve caught five Pokémon, you’ll be sent to the Pokémon Research Lab to meet Mable. She’ll ask for your help with her research and offer rewards in return. Your first reward for completing the Wild Area 1 survey will be the Technical Machine for the move Rock Smash.
None of the starter Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A can learn Rock Smash.
How to Use Rock Smash To Break Boulders in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Once you get Rock Smash, you’ll need to teach it to one of your Pokémon before you can actually use it to break rocks.
- Press X to open the main menu, select the Satchel, and tab over to the TM menu using L/R.
- Select the Rock Smash TM and choose “Use this item.”
- Scroll over to Bunnelby and press A to learn the move.
- Highlight the boulder by pressing and holding ZL, then command your Pokemon to use Rock Smash.
Walk in front of a boulder, and press the directional buttons to send Bunnelby out into the field.

The Pokémon will use Rock Smash on the boulder, instantly shattering it and clearing the way.
