How to build a Watchtower in DayZ

As a seasoned survivor in the unforgiving world of DayZ, I can confidently say that the Watchtower is an indispensable fortification for any serious player. Having lost countless hours (and lives) to unsuspecting raiders, I’ve come to appreciate the strategic advantage a well-constructed Watchtower provides.

Constructing a Watchtower is an essential element when setting up a base in DayZ. This tower serves as a vantage point for players to scan the surroundings, keeping watch for potential threats and safeguarding their base. As with many aspects of DayZ, building a Watchtower isn’t a walk in the park; it requires careful planning and mastering the intricate steps involved, which often proves challenging for many players.

To make it easier for beginners who want to build a Watchtower, we’ve prepared a list of essential materials and tools, as well as instructions on their sequential assembly, which you can find below.

How to build a Watchtower in DayZ

To erect a Watchtower in DayZ, players need to construct the Watchtower Blueprint first, serving as its base structure. The Watchtower Blueprint is made by intertwining a single Rope with four Wooden Sticks.

Players should remember that the side they’re looking at will stay accessible to potential threats. To ensure safety, it would be prudent to arrange your equipment so that it’s not facing the main base.

After ensuring the Watchtower Kit is properly set up, players should insert and secure 4 wooden logs into the Base F1 slot in the kit’s inventory. You can then employ a Pickaxe or Shovel to incorporate these logs into the tower’s structure. The Watchtower consists of three levels, each requiring 4 wooden logs for construction.

After setting up the foundation of the Watchtower, players should proceed to construct its walls. Each wall can be built using either Planks or Sheet Metal and Nails. While Sheet Metal offers better protection against attacks, Planks are simpler to obtain. You can use a Hatchet or Hammer to build these walls. Once you’ve built the first level of walls, you’ll need Planks or Sheet Metal and 20 Nails for the ceiling construction, which also requires a Hatchet or Hammer. Keep in mind that walls should be constructed on every level of the Watchtower.

To proceed, you’ll need Planks or Sheet Metal along with 18 Nails to assemble the Watchtower’s staircase using either a Hatchet or Hammer. Once players reach the second floor, they can establish the base of the upper level utilizing 4 Wooden Logs. After that, follow the pattern of building walls, floors, and stairs for subsequent levels, repeating the process.

Building the second floor in this game often poses a challenge for many players. To get started on this, always position yourself at the top of the staircase and look down. Once you’ve successfully constructed all three levels of the Watchtower, you can add the final touch: the roof. The roof can be crafted using either Planks or Sheet Metal along with Nails.

DayZ: Watchtower Defense and Stealth

For optimal strength in constructing your Watchtowers, consider using Sheet Metal instead of Planks. You’ll find that Sheet Metal is roughly double the durability of Planks, which means it can handle more damage before collapsing. While a Plank wall typically gives way after around 7 Grenades, Sheet Metal could potentially endure twice as many.

It’s recommended that players put up Camo Nets on their Watchtowers whenever feasible. This makes them harder to spot in forested areas, thereby reducing the likelihood that other players will notice your base location. If you follow these instructions carefully, you should now have a strong and secure Watchtower to protect your valuable items in the tough terrain of DayZ.
