Aqueducts were a key part of ancient Roman civilization, showcasing their impressive engineering skills. In the game Anno 117: Pax Romana, like in real life, aqueducts deliver fresh water to cities. However, unlike other buildings, they require a more involved building process and specific conditions to be met. Because they become available later in the game, this guide will explain how to unlock and construct aqueducts in Anno 117: Pax Romana.
How To Unlock Aqueducts In Anno 117: Pax Romana
Okay, so I figured out how to get aqueducts! You don’t start with them, you actually unlock them by upgrading one of your basic houses – a Plebeian Residence – into an Eques Residence. To do that, though, you’ve gotta make sure your Plebeians are happy. Basically, I needed to give them plenty of Bread, Garum, build some Sanctuaries and Grammaticus schools, and make sure they had Sandals and Soap. Once they were all set, I could finally upgrade and unlock the aqueducts!
In Anno 117: Pax Romana, building Aqueducts requires a large amount of Concrete, which becomes available around the same time as the Aqueducts themselves. You’ll also need Wood, Tiles, and coins.
How To Build Aqueducts In Anno 117: Pax Romana
Aqueduct systems consist of three main components: the water source, the aqueduct itself, and the water storage cistern. Each system has a single source of water, but the aqueduct line can be made up of many sections. Importantly, an aqueduct can have multiple cisterns, enabling water access at various points along the system.
Importantly, Aqueducts must flow downhill, so consider the topography of your island when planning.
Okay, so when I’m building the Aqueduct Source, I need to put it in one of those special Mountain Slots. The game actually shows me which slots are available, which is super helpful. Just a heads-up though, those same slots are used for building Limestone Quarries and Iron Mines too, so I gotta make sure I don’t fill them all up, or be prepared to tear down an existing one to make space!
Players can connect the main pieces of the Aqueduct to the water source, guiding the water to the areas that need it. They can also place Aqueduct Cisterns along the way or at the end, which will improve the health and fire safety of buildings nearby.
Press V to switch into planning mode. This lets you design the path of an Aqueduct without using any concrete or money until you’re ready to build it.
You can also create smaller channels branching off the main water channel to supply water to additional areas where you can build more storage tanks. Just make sure these smaller channels continue to slope downwards.
Aqueduct Boosts Via Research In Anno 117: Pax Romana
In Anno 117: Pax Romana, you can unlock new discoveries by gathering knowledge through buildings like the Grammaticus and other methods. Some of these discoveries will improve how well your aqueducts function. These are mostly economic advancements, so it’s worth exploring that part of the technology tree.
There are several ways to improve your production: Duct Irrigation helps farms, Aqua Arborica benefits plantations, and Hushing increases mine output. To make these effective, be sure to build Aqueduct Cisterns close by.
If you click on the Aqueduct, you’ll be able to see which Cisterns and nearby farms are currently using water – up to a maximum of 100. If too many farms or plantations are using all the water, you can disable them from this menu.
You can select farms or plantations to check their water supply and see if it’s helping them produce more.
