As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Frostpunk 2 has quickly become one of my favorite survival games. The game’s challenging yet rewarding mechanics have kept me on my toes, and the Research Institute is undoubtedly a game-changer!
In the gripping tale of Frostpunk 2, my primary mission is to ensure survival amidst a world rapidly deteriorating. Scarcity of food sources, escalating weather conditions, and dwindling energy reserves for our generators and heaters create an environment fraught with peril. Yet, I believe in the power of resilience and innovation. By establishing the Research Institute in Frostpunk 2, I can unlock the secrets to thriving in this harsh reality!
How to Construct a Research Institute
To establish a Research Institute, it’s essential that you first have a thriving Residential Area. The Research Institute serves as an advanced building within your urban development plan, specifically engineered to expedite the research process within the Idea Tree. By adding more Research Institutes—one per Residential Area is the limit—you can speed up the discovery of new technologies at a faster pace.
Regardless, you’ll locate the Research Institute in the Building selection, positioned at the lower right corner of your Heads-Up Display (HUD). You can identify it by its structure resembling a building or a pile of containers. It falls under the Housing category.
To construct the actual building, you require:
- 400 Workforce
- 100 Heatstamps
- 50 Prefabs
From that location, you’ll need approximately 400 staff members to maintain the building’s operations and an extra 40 units of heat. Consequently, it’s usually wise to situate the Research Institute in a Residential Area close to your Central District, as this is where your power generator is located.

What to Research First in Frostpunk 2
In Frostpunk 2, the Idea Tree is expansive, encompassing six key areas: Heating, Resources, Frostland, City, Society, and Hubs. You’ll need to pick your projects wisely as you can only work on one idea at a time. Completing an idea may take days or even weeks, during which your settlement could undergo significant changes. Here’s where I suggest you should initially direct your attention:
- Coal Mines (Heating)
- Housing Insulation (Heating)
- Factories (Resources)
- Charcoal Plants (Resources)
- Hothouses (Resources)
- Housing Block (City)
- Maintenance Duty (City)
- Hospitals (Society)
- Youth (Society)
- Maintenance Hub (Hubs)
- Emergency Medical Hub (Hubs)
Absolutely, you’re welcome to tailor your city as you see fit in Frostpunk 2, and I encourage you to choose a distinct approach when exploring new research ideas.
Building new residential areas in Frostpunk 2 requires an increase in food supply as your populace expands. Remember to visit the TopMob forums for discussions on this game and similar ones!
