In *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, many different Pokemon live around Lumiose City, either seeking a quiet existence or hoping to be trained into powerful battlers. *Larvitar* is one of the most popular Pokemon people are looking for.
Larvitar has always been a bit of a challenge to locate in Pokémon games, and that’s still true in Legends Z-A. This guide will show you where to find Larvitar and how to evolve it into the powerful Tyranitar, plus how to make the most of its abilities with Mega Evolution.
Where to Find Larvitar in Pokemon Legends Z-A
In *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, you can find Larvitar during the daytime in specific areas of Lumiose City, and in the evenings within Wild Zone 15. If you’re comfortable with the Roll/Vault movement technique, you might be able to reach the rooftop of Vert Sector 2 to catch Larvitar early – or even an Alpha Larvitar if you get lucky!
To gain access to the rooftop area where Larvitar Spawns, follow these instructions:
- Travel to Vert Plaza (Wild Area 2).
- Climb the stairs and follow the park path towards a ladder on the right side (check the map location above).
- Dodge the Bellsprouts and climb the green roof, go to the boxes on the opposite side, and climb on top.
- Now, stick to the border and carefully move the right stick up to the edge of the collision block.
- Now press and release Y/B while moving the stick forward. This should make the trainer roll and fall on the opposite roof.
- Follow the path to Larvitar or Alpha Larvitar.
If you’re having difficulty reaching the rooftop, you can unlock access by completing Main Mission 16. Once finished, you’ll gain the Rotom Glide ability, which makes getting there much easier.
How to Evolve Larvitar in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Okay, so I’ve been grinding with Larvitar, and it’s cool how it evolves pretty straightforwardly. It turns into Pupitar at level 30, then Tyranitar at level 55 – no trading or anything special needed. But get this – if Tyranitar’s holding a Tyranitarite during a battle, it can Mega Evolve into Mega Tyranitar! It’s a serious power boost, and it’s awesome to use in a fight.
You’ll get the Tyranitarite by finishing the main mission called “A Rogue Mega Tyranitar,” which appears later in the game. Tyranitar is a powerful Pokémon – often called a Pseudo-Legendary because of its high base stat total of 600 – and is well worth preparing for Mega Evolution.

Mega Tyranitar gains significant stat increases when it evolves, with boosts of 30 to Attack, 40 to Defense, 20 to Special Defense, and 10 to Speed. This brings its total base stats to 700, matching Mega Dragonite. While already durable, players can maximize Mega Tyranitar’s potential as a physical attacker by focusing its Effort Values on Attack and HP (a 252/252/6 distribution is ideal), and adding a few to Speed if desired.
The best moves for Mega Tyranitar are Crunch, Heavy Slam, Earthquake (or Rock Blast), and Giga Impact. Adding Outrage can also be helpful, giving it more options in battle and effectively countering Mega Dragonite.
