Even after you finish the main story in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, there’s still plenty to do. To fully complete the game, players need to catch Legendary Pokemon like Yveltal. Getting the Kalos trio – Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde – is a major goal, but it requires some effort before you can add them to your collection.
Catching the Legendary Pokémon Yveltal is a bit different than in past games, as each Legendary is unique and tied to a main story quest. This guide will walk you through how to catch Yveltal, as well as its strongest moves and the best stats for battling.
Where to Find & How to Catch Yveltal in Pokemon Legends Z-A
To encounter Yveltal, players must first finish the main story up to Mission 37, “Operation Protect Lumiose,” and watch the credits scene that follows. Then, they’ll receive a call to Hotel AZ and can make a Wish after achieving Rank A in the AZ Royale. The process is simple until players receive another call from ‘L’ while they are back at the Hotel.
I’ll be explaining ‘The One Who Takes’ and ‘The One Who Gives’ to Team MZ. Players will need to team up with old members of Team Flare to learn more about these Pokémon, which are reportedly heading towards Lumiose City.
Yveltal is known as The One Who Takes, and to battle and catch it, players need to speak with Grisham and Griselle at Cafe Noveau. They’ll then direct you to Vinnie at Quasartico Inc. Vinnie will test your skills with a simulation battle against three powerful Mega Evolutions: Victreebel, Tyranitar, and Staryu. You must win this battle to continue the mission.
Before you start, double-check that your Pokémon team is at least level 80, and be sure to save your game first.
After completing that step, Vinnie and the rest of Team Flare Noveau will tell players to head to the shopping mall in Rouge District, as Yveltal is flying nearby.
Okay, so I figured out how to start the Yveltal battle! You need to head to that spot on the map, then climb the ladder on the side of the mall. After that, just follow the path on the roof until you get to the big dome right in the center of the building. Climb up onto the dome itself, and then interact with the exclamation mark – that’s what starts the fight with Yveltal! It’s awesome!
This battle will be challenging, as Yveltal uses powerful and frustrating attacks like Oblivion Wing, Dragon Rush, Hurricane, and Phantom Force. The limited space will make dodging difficult, and Yveltal will likely move to the edges of the arena, potentially causing some of its attacks to miss due to collisions.
Try to battle Yveltal near the center of the dome whenever you can. When its health drops below 50%, you’ll see a pattern of arrows showing when it’s easiest to catch. Start throwing Ultra Balls before Yveltal is fully weakened, or
After catching Yveltal, players can adjust its stats and moves to make it stronger in battle. To do this effectively, it’s best to aim for a Yveltal with a Timid nature (which can be changed with mints), as this increases its Speed while slightly lowering its Attack. When training its Effort Values (EVs), focus on the following distribution:
- 252 HP
- 252 Sp. Atk
- 6 Speed
Yveltal works best as a special attacker, utilizing moves like Hurricane, Dark Pulse, Focus Blast, and its unique move, Oblivion Wing. While these Flying and Dark-type attacks are ideal, trainers can also teach Yveltal diverse coverage moves such as Heat Wave and Shadow Ball for greater versatility.
