Participating in Ghost of Yotei cooking is an optional side activity for Atsu. The game offers great rewards to motivate players to use this system, particularly when playing on harder difficulty levels.
This guide will show you how to begin cooking in the game, explain what advantages it offers, and tell you where to find the ingredients you’ll need. Here’s a quick overview of what we’ll cover.
How to Cook in Ghost of Yotei
Atsu has the ability to cook fish or mushrooms while at a camp in Ghost of Yotei. To set up your own camp, or to rest at an existing Ainu camp, press and hold the left direction on the D-Pad while you are next to your horse, or even while riding it.

While at your camp, find the cooking basket near the fire and press X to open the ingredients list. Select the food you’d like to prepare, then press X again to begin cooking.

As a player, I’ve found that if you tilt your PS5 DualSense Controller down, Atsu will actually bring the food closer to the fire – it’s a really cool feature! Then, press O to flip the food over the flames so it cooks evenly on both sides. Once it’s done, you’ll automatically go back to the normal view, and Atsu will get a helpful food buff right away.
The “Quick Camp” option under Options > Gameplay can be toggled ON to automate the cooking process.
Cooking Ingredients in Ghost of Yotei

Okay, so in Ghost of Yotei, the cooking system is super simple – there are only two ingredients: fish and mushrooms. Basically, whenever I eat *any* food I make, it gives my character, Atsu, a buff that lasts for the whole day. It’s a nice little boost to help me get through everything!
- Fish: Grants bonus spirit and a random major perk for a full in-game day.
- Mushroom: Grants bonus spirit and a random minor perk for a full in-game day.
The benefits can fall into three categories: defense, offense, or general usefulness, and they change with each playthrough. You can see any perks that are currently active, along with what they do, in the top left corner of the gear screen.

Bonus spirit is shown as a green icon with a white outline appearing above Atsu’s health bar. This white outline also indicates how much time remains until the effect of the food buff expires.
Atsu will only eat when she is actually hungry, so you can’t save up food bonuses or consume more than one food item in a single day.
How to Get Fish and Mushrooms in Ghost of Yotei

Both fish and mushrooms are items you can find in the overworld simply by exploring, much like finding bamboo or flowers. They appear naturally and can be collected when you come across them.
- Fish can be found in wooden fishing traps found in rivers and other bodies of water (pictured above).
- Mushrooms can be found on overturned logs, damp locations like swamps or rivers, or under heavy shade.
Some sellers, such as the Ainu, trade food for copper – they don’t accept money. These merchants usually have a small supply of goods that they restock periodically.
