As a long-time fan of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (MW3), I’ve faced my fair share of frustrations when going against opponents wielding Riot Shields. Their unyielding defense can be infuriating, especially during close quarters combat where you might empty your magazine into them, only for them to miraculously survive. However, over the years, I’ve learned some effective strategies to counter this defensive powerhouse at different distances.
In more recent versions of “Call of Duty,” the addition of Riot Shields has drawn complaints from numerous gamers. The reason being, these shields provide an impressive defensive ability. For example, you could be shooting a player relentlessly with an empty magazine, but they’d miraculously survive and continue moving away—a truly frustrating experience!
For years, various opponents have employed riot shields as a defensive measure in public matches of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. In this tutorial, we’ll explore the most successful techniques for breaching these shields at different distances. Additionally, we’ll provide a bonus tip at the end.
How to Counter a Riot Shield During Close Combats
An effective approach when facing an adversary wielding a Riot Shield is to leap forward and use a knife or melee attack instead.
The best part here is that you can perform the melee action in multiple ways, as mentioned below:
- Equipping your gun with a Breacher Device attachment that guarantees a one-hit kill.
- Equipping a Melee weapon as your secondary. For instance, a knife.
- Equipping Throwing Knife as a Lethal Attachment in your loadout.
Each of these three techniques maintains the same implementation. Employing a Stun or Flash Grenade as your chosen tactical gear is an effective approach to securing a kill using this method.
One effective method I’ve discovered for amplifying the power of my primary weapons is by utilizing the JAK Limb Ripper Attachment. Unlike the previous technique, this approach is more simplified. Instead of just employing it as a melee weapon, you should crank the chainsaw all the way while engaging an enemy. This not only makes the attack more impactful but also ensures a fatal outcome.
How to Counter a Riot Shield at a Medium Distance
In cases when you can’t reach a Riot Shield, i.e., you’re at a 10-meter (or more) distance from it, the best option here is to use your Lethal Equipment. You can use one of these three pieces of equipment:
- Semtex
- Drill Charge
- Thermite
Each of these Lethal Equipments is nearly assured to result in a fatal outcome, except for Drill Charge which isn’t consistently effective. Among the three, the Thermite stands out not due to its explosive force, as all have that capability—but rather because of its trajectory.
The significance of a trajectory lies in the distance, which often makes it challenging to accurately hit your target. Thus, the benefit that Thermite provides could prove crucial in such situations.
As a gamer, I can tell you that there’s an alternative way to add some explosive action to your gameplay. Instead of using traditional grenades, you can opt for Underbarrel attachments that come loaded with these explosives. For example, the Drill Charge Underbarrel lets you hurl a drill charge towards enemy players, following a trajectory that you set.
How to Counter a Riot Shield With The Soulrender Melee
In COD MW3’s Season 2 Reloaded Update, the Soulrender weapon made its appearance. This weapon is an excellent choice for countering the Riot Shield. You don’t need to execute complex maneuvers or even jump; simply get near an opponent and deliver a powerful assault to initiate the lethal finishing move.
