Lumiose City has some barriers that require specific actions to clear. Besides purple goo and rocks, players in Pokemon Legends Z-A will encounter thorny vines and need to figure out how to remove them.
Many players assume you need to use the Cut move to clear thorny vines in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, similar to past *Pokemon* games. However, the solution is simpler! Just like dealing with slime or rocks in Lumiose City, you need to use an attack that the vines are weak against.
How to Cut Thorns in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Destroy Vines in Legends Z-A With Specific Moves
Okay, so in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, I learned that if you run into those thorny obstacles, you absolutely *have* to use a Fire-type move to get rid of them. If I didn’t choose Tepig at the beginning, which I didn’t, I’ll need to actually catch a Fire-type Pokemon and train it up so it knows a Fire move. It’s a bit annoying, but hey, gotta clear those paths somehow!
- One pokemon with Fire moves that you can get early is Fletchling. Though this pokemon starts out with flying and normal moves, it will gain the ability to learn Ember around level 10. You can catch Fletchling throughout the city, but particularly in Wild Zone 1.
- Another Fire pokemon that can be caught early is Litleo. The earliest place to get Litleo is in Wild Zone 3, which you will encounter as part of the main story progression.
If you encounter thorny bushes, use a Fire-type Pokémon and any of its Fire moves to burn the thorns and clear a path. A single attack can destroy multiple vines if they’re close together.
In *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, you’ll need to wait a short time for your Pokemon’s fire attack to become available again before you can keep clearing away thorns.
What Happens When You Remove Thorns in Pokemon Legends Z-A?

In *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, your Pokemon earn a little experience points whenever they clear away thorny obstacles, similar to how they gain XP from removing rocks or clearing goo. Unlike experience earned through battles, this XP isn’t split between your whole team. You can also discover hidden items within the thorn bushes themselves.
In *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, look for colorful beams of light – red, purple, or yellow – shining from under thorny vines. These beams indicate the rarity of the item hidden underneath. Even if you don’t find a valuable item while exploring Lumiose City, your Pokemon will still earn experience points for clearing away the vines.
