As soon as you start playing Where Winds Meet, you’ll find a huge number of activities available, whether you’re playing alone or with friends. There are creatures to defeat, recipes to master, hidden treasures to find, and tons of other things to do – it can be overwhelming figuring out where to begin! Fortunately, you’ll soon be guided towards the General’s Shrine.
Ruby invites you to join a contest with fantastic prizes, but there are also many other tasks you can complete. Surprisingly, the most powerful fighters here turn out to be a group of kids and an elderly man!
Where To Meet Elder Gongsun

Okay, so you can’t really miss Elder Gongsun – I ran into him pretty early on in the story. Once I got to the General’s Shrine, I found out about this competition, and the prize looked awesome! Thankfully, I only had to win one fight to get it, though there were tons of other people around who were up for a duel if I wanted the practice.
While exploring the arena, you’ll receive a new quest called “More Than Meets The Eye.” You’ll notice a sad child who’s struggling to win any matches, so you decide to take on all the challengers yourself. Most are kids, and surprisingly tough, but none of them compare to the real challenge: Elder Gongsun.
You can challenge him by simply walking up and asking for a match. He’ll be clearly highlighted on your screen when you have the related quest active, so you’ll easily find him. Just be warned – he’s a tough opponent!
How To Beat Elder Gongsun
During practice fights, everyone uses the same tools, not their own abilities. You’ll be given a wooden sword that already has some fighting skills built in, and the aim is to empty your opponent’s energy (shown as the blue bar under their health) five times. Keep in mind that energy recovers slowly during these fights, and it’s easy to lose, particularly for you.
Martial arts attacks inflict significant Qi damage, making them very effective for quickly reducing Gongsun’s Qi.
Elder Gongsun attacks with incredibly fast punches and kicks. Luckily, you can block all of his attacks, which will also reduce his energy. He’s difficult to hit because he blocks quickly, so be ready to block his counterattacks after you’ve blocked one of his strikes.
When you narrowly avoid Gongsun’s attacks, time briefly slows, letting you counterattack while he’s vulnerable. Although many of his moves are easy to predict, his spinning attacks are difficult to block completely. If you struggle to deflect them, focus on dodging and attacking him from behind during his recovery.
Besides his close-range attacks, Gongsun can jump onto the arena’s poles and bounce between them before delivering a strong attack. He has two different attacks he uses this way. One involves him transforming into a frog, signaled by a red glow – you can deflect this attack to build up extra Qi damage. The other is a golden kick, which you’ll need to dodge to avoid getting hit.
As a Gongsun player, I’ve learned he’s really good at getting his Qi back. He’ll actually step back and do these flowing arm movements to completely fill it up. You can interrupt it, but forget about using normal attacks – you need to go for heavy hits and martial arts to break his pose. The key is to stay aggressive, even when you’re dodging! It might mean your own Qi doesn’t recover as quickly, but it’ll ensure his doesn’t get a chance to, giving you the advantage.
Do You Need To Beat Elder Gongsun?
If you’re having trouble defeating Gongsun, you might wonder if it’s even worth the effort. What could you possibly gain from winning? Luckily, especially during the “More Than Meets The Eye Encounter” quest, you don’t have to beat him. Surprisingly, you actually earn an achievement for losing to him! He’s designed to be a really difficult opponent.
Even after you complete the quest, defeating him has a special benefit: he’ll become a friend and regularly send you gifts. Plus, he’ll join your team as an ally you can call on during difficult boss fights. Given how challenging he was as an opponent, he’s sure to be a valuable asset in those battles.
