How to defeat The Black Flame, Nu Udra

In the heart of Monster Hunter Wilds lies the Oilwell Basin, a scorching territory where chaos reigns supreme. And then there’s this monstrous beast, the explosive gorilla named Ajarakan, who seems to be the ruler of this fiery domain. I mean, he’s got to be the Apex monster here, don’t you think? Don’t you?

After successfully dealing with two members of the Ajarakan pack, another mysterious figure emerges from the darkness, swiftly defeating the last ape in an instant – a formidable adversary that the people of the basin call ‘The Black Flame‘.

Following an intense clash, it’s time for you to devise a strategy to vanquish The Black Flame Nu Udra and safeguard the citizens of Azuz. Immediately after overcoming Ajarakan, you’ll be thrown right into this confrontation, so remember to return to camp, gather essential supplies (maybe even some fresh armor), before this cephalopod conqueror reduces you to ashes.

What type of monster is Nu Udra?

In Monster Hunter Wilds, not only does Nu Udra represent the introduction of a fresh monster, but it also introduces an entirely new Monster Type: the Cephalopod. This means that combat against this creature will be unlike any other monster encounter in the series (with the exception of those that may appear post-Nu Udra). The distinguishing features of Cephalopods are their numerous tentacles, which can be used to strike you, and their agility to quickly retreat into tight spaces during battle.

In Monster Hunter Wilds, when you encounter Nu Udra, you’ll find yourself battling it solo, as it doesn’t have any accompanying minions.

How to Fight Nu Udra

In Low Rank, encountering Nu Udra presents an opportunity. You’ve likely recently fought two Ajarakans, providing enough resources to create the complete Ajarakan armor set. I strongly advise you to do so because this armor offers robust defense against fire and comes equipped with the Partbreaker skill. This skill will prove invaluable when managing those pesky tentacles.

Since the Nu Udra is a colossal octopus, it’s not unexpected that most of its attacks involve its tentacles. These can range from charging attacks, where it slams its tentacles, to swiping the ground forcefully to knock you off balance. Its small mustache also participates in these assaults, delivering a stinging slap if you venture too near.

When the creature known as Nu Udra lifts its tentacles, be aware of two actions it might perform. The first is a spinning motion, which is signaled when Nu Udra twists two tentacles over its head. Following this, it may raise its tentacles in front of its face and then charge forward with its entire body. Keep in mind that Nu Udra is capable of grabbing you, so it would be wise to have a pod at the ready to fire at it when necessary.

When provoked, The Black Flame truly embodies its name by igniting itself, which amplifies its power. In this fiery state, its assaults inflict greater harm and it unleashes flames from the tips of its tentacles, extending the reach of its attacks. Moreover, when ablaze, The Black Flame also gains access to additional attack abilities.

The secret to defeating Nu Udra lies in the fact that each of its limbs can be detached; this implies that after you handle several arms, its reach becomes significantly diminished. Naturally, it’s wise to target the front two, as they are the ones used most frequently. Remember to capitalize on any wounds that appear on the tentacles to remove them promptly when they occur.

Other Nu Udra attacks to look out for

Slam – Nu Udra will lean back, exposing its disgusting underbelly to you before slamming itself forward onto you and dealing a massive amount of damage. Run to the side to deal with it.
Fire turret – During the flaming mode, Nu Udra will curl itself up into a tower and start shooting a flamethrower blast at you. If you keep your distance, you shouldn’t have too much trouble dodging this, just run to the side.

High Rank Nu Udra attacks

In its initial encounter for High Rank, Nu Udra will ignite upon first engagement and display heightened aggression throughout the combat. Furthermore, it acquires a novel skill while flaming, causing it to shake violently, scattering fireballs across the battlefield as if it were an explosive firework display.

In consideration of top-tier choices, the Ajarakan alpha armor set remains a solid pick for its consistent advantages, not forgetting the added bonus of the Resentment skill that proves quite effective. Alternatively, the Rathalos set is worth considering as it equips you with the Evade Window skill, a valuable asset for swiftly evading those pesky tentacles.

Nu Udra weaknesses

icons indicating higher levels of damage are more powerful, with ‘1’ signifying the least damage and ‘4’ representing the most. Icons that do not show an element do not provide any additional damage bonus.

In the course of the game, you’ve likely encountered both Balahara and Uth Duna by now, creatures weak to Water-based weapons. Since these battles are behind you, you have access to an assortment of Water weapons. Moreover, it’s worth noting that Dual Blades feature a unique ‘Water Element Tree’, primarily constructed using ores.

For a High Rank rematch, you’ll continue to depend on Balahara and Uth Duna for your water-based weaponry. However, you’ll gain the assistance of Xu Wu, another Cephalopod, who brings powerful water weapons to the table (though only five in total).

Generally speaking, when it comes to choosing a weapon, I’d suggest picking one that aligns with your preference and has strong power. However, given that Nu Udra’s tentacles can be severed, I strongly advise opting for a weapon that inflicts slash damage. Although blunt and long-range weapons are still effective, you’ll find this battle much smoother if you use a weapon capable of disabling the monster’s primary attack method.

Regarding the types of harm it incurs, Nu Udra’s ratings show a predominance of blunt damage affecting its Head, Membrane, Tentacle, and Torso sections. This is significant since combat won’t allow you to sever its tentacles.
