How to Destroy the Red Smoke & Beat Tarandus in Crimson Desert

Once you’ve finished a good number of quests for the factions in Pailune, the Odeck Tribe will give you a new quest called “The Black Bears and the Red Smoke.” To start the quest and begin hunting down the remaining Black Bears, simply go to the Odeck Floodgate in Pailune and talk to the person who needs assistance.

The main goal of this task is to find and eliminate the red smoke from three areas now controlled by the Black Bears. However, the game doesn’t explicitly tell you that you can destroy the red smoke using the Stab attack (R1+Triangle on PlayStation, or RB+Y on Xbox).

How to Investigate the Red Smoke from Volvior Ruins in Crimson Desert

  • Head north of the Odeck Floodgates to find the Volvior Ruins just 100 meters away.
  • This area is infested with Black Bears, who will need to be killed to liberate the area.
  • Close to the red smoke in the center of the white mission zone is Tarandus the Ashen. You need to deal around 15% of damage to his health bar to make him retreat.
  • Once the area is cleared of enemies, you’ll find the red smoke in the center of the stone platform.
  • To destroy the red smoke, use R1+Triangle ot Stab it, then R2 to Pierce, which will see the red smoke leak out and eventually drain.

You can use Stab multiple times to make the red liquid drain faster!

How to Investigate the Red Smoke from Volstein Ruins in Crimson Desert

  • Head south of the Volvior Ruins to find the Volstein Ruins.
  • This area is also filled with Black Bears and Tarandus the Ashen.
  • Repeat the cycle of killing enemies and damaging Tarandus to force their retreat and liberate the area.
  • Approach the red smoke at the stone platform and press R1+Triangle, then R2 to Pierce.

How to Investigate the Red Smoke from Verheim Ruins in Crimson Desert

  • Head west of the Volstein Ruins to find the Verheim Ruins 480 meters away.
  • This is the final area with red smoke, which also has plenty of Black Bears and another encounter with Tarandus.
  • Clear them out the same as before, and then approach the red smoke in the center of the stone’s raised platform.
  • Just like before, use Stab (R1+Triangle) and Pierce (R2) to break through the red smoke.

You’ve cleared the red smokes near Odeck, so head back to the Odeck Floodgates to challenge Tarandus the Ashen. Make sure you have lots of healing supplies – you’ll need them for this battle!

How to Beat Tarandus the Ashen in Crimson Desert (Ashen Warrior Walkthrough)

  • Tarandus will attempt to rush you with his spear, which should be dodged either left or right.
  • Tarandus will try to jump up and slam on top of you, so keep spamming roll.
  • Tarandus can be stunned and damaged with Blinding Flash Finisher (R1+L1+R2).
  • Tarandus also takes heavy damage from Turning Slash (R1+R2).
  • Repeat these moves while dodging Tarandus’ charge and slam attacks to kill him fast.
